Libraries recognize the importance of digitizing archival material to improve access to and preservation of their special collections. This book provides a step-by-step guide for creating digital collections, including examples and practical tips that have never been published before.
Complete and comprehensive book. I enjoyed specially the chapters focused on project management and design of workflows. In my opinion, it is a very good down to earth approach to digital collections development and it will help librarians to choose the right hardware and software or to find good reasons to document their digitization project. PROS: The book also offers in each chapter a case study with a lot of practical information based on DSpace and Greenstone. CONS: It is a bit outdated in terms of data sharing and it does not cover in detail the main metadata schemes (but how to create an abstract content model).
Essential reading material if someone is just starting out in digital archives or collections. However if I would not recommend reading this if you some solid experience under your belt.
