Everyone Needs a Second Chance on the Course and In Life Paul McAllister was a driven man. Ivy League educated and the founder of a multimillion dollar business, Paul was a success in everything but life-and golf. It only took one Pro-Am afternoon, one short putt, and one airborne putter to send his world flying in a different a mulligan! Golf's gracious do-over, a mulligan is the beginning of Paul's own second chance. Guided by the wisdom and advice of an Old Pro, Paul learns about priorities, about self-confidence, and about playing a good game both on and off the course. Written in the appealing "parable" style of other best-selling books such as Who Moved My Cheese? , Gungo Ho! , and Whale Done! , golf pro Wally Armstrong and author Ken Blanchard condense decades of practical know-how into a simple book with an amazing message. The Mulligan is a second chance to change it all, and improve both your life and your game!
Found this slim volume in a box of books about golf and baseball at a second-hand book store last week.
I was ASTOUNDED by a coincidence yesterday. When she saw me watching golf on TV, my Aunt Mary walked up to me and said, "I learned a new word this week--'mulligan.'" And she went on to tell me about this new movie starring Pat Boone. I quickly summarized the book I was reading and she agreed, the two sounded similar. Sure enough, this obscure, 15-year-old book I dug out of a box of hidden gems in a second-hand store is not only the basis for a movie, but the movie begins its TWO-DAY RUN today. Tomorrow is the last day!
(Maybe I'll catch it on video.)
I enjoyed the book. It's about GRACE. The mulligan is golf's version of a do-over, and the book is about a man too proud to accept a mulligan no matter how badly he needs one.
Actually, it's a good story about a high-achieving, prideful man who is driven, but can't forgive his father who abandoned him, and can't forgive himself for never being there for his own son.
As I read the book, I thought of young men I know who could really benefit from the book's message about mulligans--not only in sports, but in life.
I also liked an evangelistic statement at the end in which one of the writers reported having been told once, "You've always been on God's team, you just haven't dressed out."
It's time. Time to put on the uniform and join the game.
A modern-day parable and an apt analogy to much of the Christian experience. A quick read, and we can relate to type-A, hard-driven people, too busy to think about what life really is and too ego-driven to deal with priorities as they are meant to be sorted. I was hugely disappointed in the phrase "trapped in a church," as it would be impossible for me to imagine that. If you are trapped in a church, you may be in the wrong one. Nor did Bible reading make the cut. Still, I recommend this, especially to golfers and would-be golfers. I look forward to the movie, and expect I'll like it better.
I loved this book because it tied golf (which I semi-enjoy) to our relationships with others but more importantly, our relationship with Jesus Christ. He gives us the ultimate Mulligan every day and I loved the way the authors used this short parable to demonstrate their point. My thanks to whoever left this book in my Little Library as it is a hidden gem and one I will share with family and friends.
The Mulligan by Wally Armstrong is a little book that packs a big punch. Everyone needs a second chance in golf and in life. Paul McAllister is a very driven man who goes to a Pro-Am Golf Tournament to play with a famous golfer. He gets so upset that he throws his putter in a small lake. The golfer takes him aside and says he needs a little help and takes him to see an old Pro. The lessons in this book are important for all.
I really enjoyed this light read (so light that everytime I sat on the crapper I read a chapter). Combines intersting insights on ways to mentally approach golf, life, and religion. All of which I would like to improve on.
A simple, yet inspiring, message about our need for grace in life. Second chances are the opportunities most of us need at some point if we have the humility to receive them.
