For Krista, a modern housewife living an idyllic life in the surroundings of a Devon village, there is little expectation that she will be diagnosed with cancer. Her frightening journey through surgery and treatment is raw with the passion of a mother protecting the innocence of her children. Her two young boys are never told. Dr. Georg Hoffman lives in a small North German town with his family during the uncertain years of Nazi rule. War is threatening the lives of those they love and respect. Propaganda and the Gestapo warn everyone of the need to watch out for the enemy, leading Georg to make difficult decisions that will threaten his family’s survival. In Kerstin Moore’s debut novel, we are confronted with the secrets we choose to keep in order to do the right thing, the strain those secrets bring and how with time and healing, we can make sense of loss, grief and sufferings. Those who have been traumatised by life will find hope and faith. Based on a true story.

Beautiful read. Moving and compelling, you can’t help but be drawn into the world of the characters in the book. It is fascinating to read about life in the war from the perspective of a German family and how they must navigate their way through such a tragic and fearful period. Just as the protagonist must blindly feel her way through her cancer journey in current UK. I felt like I knew the characters intimately by the end of the book, which was a real page turner, and was disappointed to bid them farewell.

Although I believe there is a sequel, so there’s that!

A totally absorbing and moving read - virtually every chapter leaves you hanging, keen to continue.
Set in North Devon in the 21st century but slipping back in family history to 1930/1940's Germany.
A novel but the factual basis for it is very evident and knowledge of that makes it all the more gripping.
It's a debut novel but truly excellent.
