Starting my own business is something I always wanted to do but viewed it as a little scary. This book does show you some pitfalls, but also first-hand experiences of how to overcome those challenges or avoid them in the first place. I loved the interviews with various artistic business owners. His positivity about getting started was infectious, he is clearly passionate about it, and made it seem so easy.

"The new-agey open plan work space favoured by so-called forward thinking companies is a terrible idea. Once championed as a way to break down office hierarchies and foster communication, it’s an outright productivity killer that promotes idle chit-chat, interruptions and a whole host of other distractions—positively guaranteed to kill off any attempt to complete meaningful work." I honestly could not agree more. This is one more thing on the checkbox of why I want to go out on my own.

My only complaint is that I already know about Marketing, and this book is mostly Marketing and selling yourself, your brand. I have seen that the Marketing side is where business owners do struggle, but I was hoping also for some more practical matters (knowing that some of that will vary by country).

It is like he crawled into my brain and ripped out all the bits that have made my business successful.

I loved this book. It read as if Dean had crawled into my brain and removed all the bits that made my business struggle, and highlighted all the bits that worked and are continuing to make it thrive. It is a comprehensive, no nonsense approach to running a successful business. Every single creative needs to read this book.

Wonderful

This book is invaluable. I loved the case studies from different people and perspectives. I love that Dean included a section about health and wellness. A big part of succeeding in any career is being healthy. I can't wait to integrate what I've learned into my design business.
