This book was sent to me by the author in exchange for an honest review.

The Room, I can honestly say, is not like something I have ever read before. The books starts off with a two bodies that had either jumped/was pushed to their deaths. The reporter seems to believe that there is more at play than everyone else is lead to believe. It switches between his perspective and another character named Jasmine.

We meet Jasmine when she is broken, ready to fling herself from the cliffs edge. Her life is a sequence of bad luck. Her mother is sick and she can't pay for the bills. She is losing her job. The man she loved rejected her when she found out she was pregnant. She then loses the baby. Many things are happening in her life that has brought her to this point.

However, then a mysterious stranger comes along and offers her a job. All she knows is that it is called The Room. Jasmine believes she has just landed the perfect job, but as she digs into the truth behind her new boss and The Room, she no longer knows what is real and what is make believe.

The concept of the story is intriguing. The idea of technology so advance it came make a virtual world seem like reality is cool. I loved the mystery around The Room and Daniel's story. All of those things kept my interest.

However, I had a hard time with this book overall. It is definitely out of my comfort zone, so please keep that in mind. The ending seemed really rushed and was left unfinished. I did not understand the chips in their skin or why that was deemed essential to the story overall. The reporters story arc was left without closure, as was Jasmine's. Unless this book will have a sequel, the ending just did not do it for me.

I will say that I’m glad I did give it a try because I was entertained the entire time. This will definitely keep your attention!

Exciting and a good read.

Until about half way through, it was difficult to explain to anyone just what this book was about. I enjoyed it though and it came together.

What do you do when you've hit rock bottom and someone throws you a lifeline? In the case of Jasmine, you grab the line and hold on tightly. Only... was it really a lifeline or just another type of ending? The Room has an eerie unease to it. Told with an artistic flair by author Hannah Adkins. It was a very different adventure than what I was expecting. It's a fresh take on the futuristic mystery. One that I enjoyed fully.

About the Novel: Jasmine has hit rock bottom. She is struggling to care for her mother and pay for her care. In addition, she looses her employment and the person she thought was the love of her life.
Not long after these events; she meets a 'stranger' who offers her a career in 'The Room'. This career appears to be able to solve the majority of her problems.
Yet, she could not comprehend how much her life would change after engaging with the 'The Room' and those associated with it.

This is a brilliantly written novel! I was hooked from the beginning. I can imagine how much planning and work that must have gone in to this book.
Jasmine the protagonist is a likeable multi dimensional character. I felt her emotional rollercoaster, especially the betrayals she experienced.
There are short passionate and sexy scenes which are excellently executed.
This novel is written in the future with some futuristic technology. I feel this has been done in a relastic and believable way.
Adkins proffesionally highlights how grief can become an unhealthy obbession that can take over your life.

At times I feel the novel was over descriptive. I felt my eye glaze over some of the heavy descriptions.

Triggers - Suicide Attempt, Rape, Murder, Psychological Torture, Bereavement, Death of a Parent, Death of a Spouse & Child and Miscarriage.

Conclusion: Excellent Debut Novel! And I look forward to reading further novels by Adkins. I would not recommend this book for younger readers. I would highly recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys similar genres.

Dreadful!
Apart from the huge amount of spelling and grammatical mistakes (was it even proofread?)the threads didn't tie up at all.
As the other reviewers have said, it's a story that cannot be explained easily, but not in a good way.
The author isn't as clever as they think they are and it's so confused and convoluted.
It's almost as though it took years to write, and every time the author went back to it, they'd forgotten where they were going with it.
Although I totally understand that the reporters, the old 'buried' story and the Room eventually, but very poorly tie in at end, what was the point in any of the other characters?
Mum n Claire? They were so badly squeezed in, the author had to keep adjusting their parts.
In the beginning we were shown that Claire may be in an abusive relationship....never to be mentioned again.
Jasmine's father? Completely irrelevant that he disappeared from her life, but we spend all the book wondering when he's going to pop up again.
Sammy? Just shoe horned in for 2 pages
Will? Where did he come from? Why was he so tied up with Daniel that he couldn't leave him?
That party? Suddenly Jasmine is invited to a party the next day, but has time (whilst working full time) to get her hair, nails and even a make up artist, let alone dress and shoes!
Then, she loses an hour of her life (never explained) and Daniel ends the party, everyone just ups and leaves?!
Never mind the fact that apparently they were all about all about to play chess? Why? In what party has that ever happened??
The idea for The Room was a good one, government funded way of exploring inside minds of damaged people, from the perpetrators to the victims. It really could have been a great book.

Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy of her book in exchange for an honest review.

According to the goodreads description, if you liked Lisa Jewell’s The Family Upstairs then you will love this one. That alone was enough to get me on board!

I love a strong female lead. Jasmine is struggling to support her mother financially, when she is offered a job at the mysterious Room. The perfect job comes along at the perfect moment. Right?... H Adkins created a really cool concept for this book. The Room is a mysterious place that allows you to experience perfection. I do tend to struggle with concepts that aren’t realistic to me, so it was a little challenging for me to get fully invested in this storyline. I found some parts to be a little slow, but the story definitely grabbed my attention during other parts. The Room is different than anything I’ve ever read!

Good concept to the story but I just struggled to read it. Didn’t relate or feel any connection to the characters.

Not sure what the relevance of the LE chip was.

The way Will’s speech / accent was written became annoying especially as everyone else’s was written in proper English.

Overall disappointed.

Not for me

I picked this up because the reviews were good but I found it plodding and at the same time disturbing. The story was jumpy and the lead character Jasmine both strong yet easily influenced

I really wanted to enjoy this book more than I did.

The beginning was slow, the middle made me think it would be a good read but before I knew it, it was over!

The ending was a bit disappointing.

There needs to be more buzz going around about this book! It was so good! This is such a unique, sci fi, futuristic type of psychological thriller with some mystery rolled into it too! 🤯 I know right?! It was character driven in the best way, I really enjoyed discovering all of the connections between the characters & how they all connected to The Room! But Emma & Jas & their past & present storylines were definitely my faves! A lot of the futuristic elements of this novel felt so realistic & within reach of something that could creepily happen… especially The Room itself!

Thank you so much to @hadkinsauthor for sending this one to me as a giveaway win! I can’t wait to read more from you in the future! 💜

This book was very kindly gifted to me by the author in exchange for an honest review. I'm so glad she found me and offered me this opportunity as I don't think I would have found it otherwise and I'm glad I read it.

The Room is a unique concept, or at least I haven't come across this style and theme before. I'll be honest, the format was a little odd (large spaces between each paragraph) and when I tried to explain what the book was about I really struggled. It wasn't until over half way through where I could make sense of what was going on as there were so many threads been weaved together.

Adkins was able to create an eerie black mirror esque world where everyone has LE chips in their arm as a way to pay for things, and in Jasmine's case, work. The story follows Jasmine after she's hit rock bottom and explores how the human mind always seeks out desires, be them good or evil.

While this started off quite slow, with some parts potentially irrelevant, the middle picked up and had me turning the pages at speed. The ending was a little rushed and in some places unfinished. Overall I'm glad I read this and would recommend it for those that like dystopian/black mirror and are able to question/imagine this world while you read.
