Yoooo. This is my first Sorai Mone manga and I'm blown away.
Actually, I was kinda scared by the kanji in the title because I can't read that (Transient scale?), but it turns out the rest of the actual story isn't too bad. So what really called out to me is the art style: it reminds me of Isino Aya (whom I stan and I want everyone to read Isino Aya please) and the colours in the cover looked really nice so I got it.
It's kind of a fantasy? I'm gonna say it's maybe a modern retelling of 'The Little Mermaid' because of some of the key visuals + themes. More on that later.
This story is about Tetta, a musician whose dreams got cut short because of polyp in his throat. He still kinda plays his guitar by the seashore but we establish very early on that even though his friends from the music industry still want him to write songs, he has no interest in writing songs for other people and he's avoiding having to think about what he's been forced to give up.
He meets Nagi by the seashore (Nagi (凪) is the sea at lull), and they hit it off. Tetta likes Nagi's visuals and Nagi comes off as a nice kid. Happy and refreshing and honestly I think one of his best points at the start is he doesn't know Tetta. There's no expectations or bad memories tied with Nagi and that's probably part of why Tetta felt comfortable with him. But also, Nagi has a very good voice. There's a spark, like bubbles bursting, when Tetta hears Nagi sing and something clicks within him. Tetta feels like he can write songs again, as long as Nagi sings them.
Nagi's a bit hesitant, part of it is because he's not trained to sing but also because singing holds memories of his mother, whom they lost to the sea years ago. He eventually agrees to try it out because Tetta's enthusiasm is catching and for the most part, this is about Tetta finding a reason to live again + Nagi slowly moving out of his sheltered lifestyle.
Of course, I mentioned 'The Little Mermaid' earlier, so you know this doesn't exactly have a happy ending.
But it doesn't actually end in complete tragedy. We remember Nagi; Tetta made sure of that (his name is the N in Kanade's album, I realised 20 minutes after reading the manga). We see Tetta travelling, hoping to see Nagi again, and it looks like he did.
I honestly thought this would be an artsy type manga with no solid story that I would regret buying, but I was wrong: the characters are cute and likeable. The art style sometimes goes to uncanny valley to me (they're so skinny!!!), but it honestly looks beautiful. The waves are drawn so delicately and I love how it all flows together. Whoah, I really enjoyed this impulse 'I liked the cover' buy!
