Three word description: Twilight Zone morsels

I read this book of short stories with my YA son. Most of them were short enough to read in a single sitting - especially since they were all quite engaging. My son described "Eykiltimac Stump Acres" as "raw, interesting and greatly compelling" - about the hidden past of an Alzheimer's patient.

The stories all had nice twists but were otherwise varied. Some could be called crime stories and others paranormal horror. There was a nice variety of settings, and the main characters could be anything from a little boy to an elderly lady and all ages in between. A couple stories were a little heavy on the details of the character's job, but not enough to take away from our reading enjoyment.

We really liked this book by a Minnesota author! The author and I actually went to high school together but I didn't know him personally. I've put a couple of his novels on my reading list, and I hope he writes another set of short stories. Great stuff!

Jeffrey B. Burton is an author I am coming to appreciate more with each book I read. Shadow Play is a short story collection; the stories tilting to horror. I could definitely envision any and all being scripts for The Alfred Hitchcock Show or The Twilight Zone. I can't say any of the stories made my hair stand on end, but they certainly entertained me.
