Fenouil / Pauli / Davy #10

Davy in the Middle

Rate this book
Poor Davy is stuck in the middle. He's too little to go hiking on the mountain with big brother Dan and he's too big to play hop-on-pop with Donny, Daisy, and Dinah. But he's just right whenever the rest of the Rabbit family needs him to do something for them -- like babysit. One day Davy has had enough! He storms out of the burrow and runs to his special hideout to sulk. ""No one loves me!"" he wails. Davy is wrong, though. His family loves him a lot, and they come up with a wonderful surprise to show him just how much.
As in the other books in the popular Davy series, this new story explores common childhood concerns sweetly and sympathetically, capturing middle-child blues with humor and insight.

I connected to this story because I too am a middle child. I also had times growing up where I felt like I was either too big for things or too little for things. I liked then ending and house the family decided to celebrate all of the special things that each family member does that makes them unique. I liked the illustrations in this book because they used blue and red to contrast against the oranges, browns, and yellows of the bunnies and the forest.

Personally, I love this book. Not in the "I want to read this book only for forever and ever", but more in a "I think my kids could benefit from this book". Being the middle child, oldest, youngest, they all have their issues that they have to deal with in the hierarchy. Though that might be the case, I think that the feelings Davy felt can be felt by all ages. I feel that it is important to take note, like this family did and celebrate what a child does for the family. They need to know they are appreciated for their patience and love. I also appreciate how this family communicates with one another, and makes a plan to do something about the problem. This book needs to be read at least once by everyone to know if it is right for their family.

This book is a good book to talk about a child's place in the family. It discusses the frustrations of being a child and specifically a middle child. It is a good story for all but especially a child that maybe feels left out of things because of their age. I would recommend it for any child second grade and younger.

Davy struggles with his position as middle child--unable to do things with his older sibling but too big to enjoy the younger sibling. Family bonds during appreciation party for Davy.
