This is a series that I feel a little bit conflicted about - on one hand the author is writing an extremely intricate and intriguing story, the world building and mythos is unparalleled, on the other the translation is not the greatest - it’s not bad by any means but it has a lot of problems like repetition of words/sentences and random grammatical mistakes and there are enough of them that they can be hard to ignore. I’d say this changes a 10/10 experience to 8/10.

The story has really memorable and epic scenes - I’d say that story wise this is on par with the best books Er Gen has written and that’s a high bar. The story is essentially a tragedy and a darker tale compared to ISSTH and AWE. The world is really vast and interesting as well. The author gradually is reveals the world as the story goes on and it’s kind of ridiculous how the author managed to convey such a complex tale in such a simple fashion.

The characters are well done as well - at least the ones that are critical to the story. The story has the common xianxia problem of having too many random characters introduced which disappear quickly and don’t make much of an emotional impact. The other problem is characters lose relevance once the main character goes somewhere else.

The story and the mystery part is especially well done. I think I haven’t been disappointed by any Er Gen book so far. He really does write the kind of fantasy stories that I haven’t read anywhere else.
