The Guilty Secret

Totally enthralling....I stayed up all night to read! Stacey's Book Journeys.
I just love, love the Arla Baker Series. Arla is such a great character, and the plot, location...it's all amazing! Sheila Miller, Amazon Reviewer.

A woman's body hangs from the disused Battersea Power Station...

When Detective Arla Baker investigates, she discovers a cold case that has puzzled detectives for almost ten years. The Battersea Strangler was the nickname given to the killer who abducted three women. Their bodies were never found, and although a man was arrested, there was never sufficient evidence to convict him.
Meanwhile, someone is leaving strange photos of a baby at the door of Arla's partner, Inspector Harry Mehta's mother's house. The messages grow, and Harry suspects his mother, Rita, is in danger, but from whom?
Then another girl disappears, very similar in appearance to the women abducted by the Battersea Strangler. When she appears dead, Arla knows she is up against a seasoned and bloodthirsty killer who will stop at nothing till his vicious desires are quenched.
And for some reason, his attention has now turned to Arla.
As another girl vanishes, and the danger to Harry's mother grows, Arla has to work and look after her own baby daughter, Nicole. Arla knows she is fighting a battle on multiple fronts. A fight that might just overcome her this time...

Wow..What a smashing story as Arla and Harry find themselves up against a scary scheme by people who have been 'hiding' as police officers for years! Evil is lurking around everything one man does...But is it Him,or is Someone Else grabbing attention killing and letting the blame fall to the one man who saw these people Last..It gets worse when old friends and family find themselves involved..And No One can get past the little evidence they have, pushing to arrest and try one man, while Arla tries to go with her gut..Which is Saying NOOOOO!!!
Fast-paced, full of action, family, love, a Team that counts on themselves to Handle Everything, and Evil which comes from the strangest places, putting everyone on edge and tense! Will Detective Baker find her way through the mess..With a new baby at home, family receiving weird messages,a new Special Agent sent to assist who flirts and makes Harry her obsession...Can Arla keep her wits about her and Find the killer, with so much pressure from All sides...Time to do what she does BEST!!
You will be engrossed in the pages from number 1, through turmoil and fear, until the ending you do NOT See Coming! A 5 STAR story in a series I adore!!
I received an ARC from the author and I happily offer You my honest thoughts and feelings in this review. Start this series NOW, for stories that definitely Take You Away...

I love reading about Arla Baker and her partner Harry Mehta,Arla has returned back to work after her daughter Nichole and to a case that has them baffled. The Battersea Strangler is giving them a hard time aswell as the big bosses.Harry's mom is recieving strange envelopes left at her door, there are no clues who has sent them as there is no writing on them other than his mom's name.I have to say this book had me baffled as to who the strangler was and wow what a climax to the finish well done M L Rose 5*

My favourite team of detectives is back!!😃 I've been lucky enough and very privileged to be part of MLRoses advanced reading club since the very beginning. Each book just gets better and better in my opinion. It's a bit of a double edge sword when Mick sends me a new book to review!! I'm so excited and I have to start reading straightaway.Everything else is put on hold and within a couple of days I've read it.But then I have to wait for the next book!!😢 Arla Baker is my addiction!! There are very few characters that I feel so strongly about, enjoy reading about and they are all by big bestselling authors.I'm not going to write about the storyline,I never do.I hate spoilers.I'll just say that the plot is great and the writing is fabulous. Mick always gives a sense of atmosphere,is very descriptive without being flowery.Everyone needs to get to know Arla.I can't recommend this book highly enough. In fact I think I'll start the whole series again.I need my fix!!!! Thank you Mick

I was quickly engrossed in this 7th book in the Detective Arla Baker serial killer series, eagerly following the various twists and turns, back and forth in time, waiting to find out how different threads were connected in this devilish plot.
I learnt Arla loves to immerse herself in investigations but she still hasn’t learnt to control her emotions to deal with her frustration and anger.
I also appreciated understanding about how the Metropolitan Police operates and the type of challenging cases they have to handle, as well as gaining some insight into the minds of serial killers and psychopaths.

I do not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing free books from publishers & authors. Therefore, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one.

Warning: This book contains descriptive accounts of extremely graphic adult content, violence, or expletive language &/or uncensored sexually explicit material (pedophile, kidnapping, minor verbally, psychologically, emotionally physically & sexual abuse, prostitution, pornography) which is only suitable for mature readers. It may be offensive or have potential adverse psychological effects on the reader. If you are especially sensitive to this type of material, it is strongly advised not to read any further.

An awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very professionally written crime thriller book. It was extremely easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a huge description list of unique characters, settings, facts etc. to keep track of. This could also make another great crime thriller movie, or better yet a mini TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is an extremely easy rating of 5 stars.

Thank you for the free author; BookFunnel; Amazon Digital Services LLC.; book.

I’m in the minority of reviewers, so please read with a teaspoon of salt. Beware SPOILERS!

There are several excellent synopses of this book, so I’ll go directly to the review. I read a lot of police procedurals, so at first, I enjoyed this book, but as I kept reading, I almost DNFed several times. Why? I questioned the logic or illogic of various police actions. Plus, even with the huge human and technical resources available, clues weren’t pursued or were investigated late/later. 30% into the book, it was clear what type of villain was a match for the storyline and its plot requirements. That settled, I began ignoring issues with protocols, procedures, forensics, pathology, etc. so I could finish the book.

The author needed a female Special Branch Inspector, and made it so, even though it beggars belief that anyone with that villain’s history was an inspector. No mitigating circumstances were presented about her background, plus I expected her to humble-brag about her accomplishments—after being disowned and discarded as a teen. The same incredulity applies to the Met Police Inspector, who was a tweeny when he beat his foster parents to death. He poured a partial container of cold cooking oil over the bodies and set them alight. I can’t believe oil would’ve burned like hydrocarbon-based liquids, but there was no hint that fire inspectors suspected arson. Plus, how’d a pathologist miss bludgeoning as cause of deaths? There are many other problems, but I’ll quit now. BTW: For readers who aren’t fond of flashbacks, there are multiple flashbacks—for two characters. Plus editing errors.

Trigger warnings: a small bird is crushed to death; other animals are killed. Disembowelings; eyeball enucleations; brain removal & mummifications. Plus, prostitution, pornography & Ephebophilia.

2.5 stars, bumped up to 3, because if not for miscues, I’d have rated this book higher.

Whoa! What an ending! I sure didn't see that coming. This 7th book of the series finds Arla returning to work after a long maternity leave. Bodies from a high profile cold case begin to show up. A special inspector appointed to help on the case is flirting with Harry. Arla has to worry about being done in time to pick up her daughter. She is stressed. Then 2 more girls disappear and the cold case becomes a new case. In the midst of it all, in a subplot Harry's mother is getting weird messages left on her porch. I enjoyed this book because we see a very human side of Arla as she juggles motherhood and work. ML Rose's characters are strong and well developed. Arla is a smart tough policewoman surrounded by an efficient team. Harry is a lot calmer, jokes around some but still gets everything done. As the book goes on we learn more about Harry's mother and her friend and glimpse Harry's early life. The bad guy Paul is appropriately evil. The style of writing is at times quite colorful. "Scimitar rays scything through the gloominess of grey bellied clouds". There are some red herrings and lots of action leading up to an ending I was totally not expecting. Another great book from ML Rose. I can't wait to read more about Arla and Harry.

An Edge of your Seat Thriller that keeps you turning pages and keeps you guessing to the end!
If I were to describe in one word this 7th book in the series, I would say WOW! With detective Arla Baker coming back from maternity leave, little did she know she would be involved with her partner, and significant other Harry on a brutal cold case they thought they had solved! When two of the missing girls from 10 years ago were found hanging in the old abandoned power plant things go from bad to worse. Especially since they found out the person who went to jail for the crime was released. Could he be taunting the police? And when a special agent gets assigned to work with the duo, Arla is not happy, especially when she flirts with Harry. To add to all that, when Arla's family gets some weird notes. With all this on her plate, will Arla find the killer before someone close to her gets hurt? You are taken on a huge roller coaster ride throughout this book. And then you reach the ending...What a surprise. Never thought of it! I can't wait to see what Arla and Harry get into next. I received an ARC from the author but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

I received a review copy from the author at my request and this is my honest opinion. Having read all of the Arla Baker series I can this is the best one to date. It is intense, suspenseful, with several red herrings along the way. And the ending is everything a thriller reader could hope for. However, I think my favorite parts of the story are when Arla and/or Harry interact with Nicole. To see the growth the characters have experienced with the introduction of Nicole into their lives is awesome. Mr. Rose has added yet another layer to the multi-faceted detective Arla Baker has become. She has always understood the pain that comes from losing a sibling since she lost her sister many years ago. Now she can empathize with parents whose children are missing or harmed. It reminds her of her love for her daughter and so she gives a little extra effort. I can't wait to see what M.L. Rose has in store next. Whatever it is, I know it will be a winner. Be sure and check out this series if you haven't already. You are missing out.

I've been following Arla since book 1 and in this book, she has had her baby a girl and Arla and Harry her working partner and lover are living together, and the story picks up now that she is back to work after taking maternity leave and baby Nicole is a year old. These pair make a formidable couple when working homicides and it looks like the Battersea Strangler is back again after a beak of 10years and not all his victims were found and no one was ever convicted of the crime, suspects yes but no one was prosecuted. Arla was not on that case at the time so she needs to look at it with fresh eyes.
The author has weaved his magic once again and produced a well written and very intense plot a must for thriller seekers.

Good book ruined for me with a far fetched reveal and plot holes.

I don't get the relevance of the nails and syringe in the envelopes, the removal of the eye, or the elaborate staging of the bodies.

Also Harry left his daughter in the car outside his mother's after agreeing to meet Smita in a nearby street to babysit the child. How did Smita get the child out of the car? Are we to believe that Harry left his daughter in an unlocked car outside his mother's when his mother had been receiving photos of babies? If he locked the car how did Smita get access to take the child back to hers. This was a police pool car so it's not as if she would have a spare key...

If Rita and Maggie suspected it was Maggie's daughter leaving the letters why didn't they mention it?

It took me a bit to get into this story. I felt it was a bit disjointed. Once it got rolling, it was one heck of a ride. I enjoyed the human side of Arla and was very impressed with her methodical detective work. She did not hesitate to listen to others in order to get the job done. The ending of this case came as a surprise, one I welcomed as it explained a couple things to me that I had picked up on. Thank you for such an entertaining story.

I received an ARC of this story, and this is my unsolicited review.

The Guilty Secret by M.L. Rose is the 7th book in the Detective Arla Baker Series. I think each book gets better and better. This book has so many twists and turns and kept me turning the pages well past my bedtime. Just when you think you’ve figured it out, you find out you weren’t even close. This is very fast paced and full of action. The Guilty Secret will keep you engaged throughout, you will not want to put it down. The ending was definitely a surprise that I did not expect. I can’t wait for the next book in this amazing series to come out.

DCI Arla and Harry , the two main characters, are involved in a complicated crime . It becomes a run against time and the outcome is mind bending.
This is a "read another chapter" book until the end. I had to finish it in a go.
Besides the main story line I very much enjoyed the author's architectural descriptions.
I have now been reading the Arla Baker series since the beginning and do not regret one sleepless night.

I have read the last 2 or 3 books in this series, and have throughly enjoyed them. It didn't take long for this book to pull me in, and I couldn't put the book down. This book had plenty of twists and turns, and it kept me guessing whom was responsible the whole time. I would certainly recommend this book to others. A young boy who was bullied started killing birds and animals. A young girl raped by a priest. This is a thriller that you will not want to put down. Arla Baker just back from maternity leave is thrown into a case of bodies hung from a ceiling and the bodies are a gruesome site. The bodies are young women killed 10 years ago. The novel has a heart pounding conclusion you will not want to miss.

A tragic, twisty, physiological thriller about the events in people’s lives that can cause deviant behavior, and how well they can hide their crimes from society. A well crafted plot and great characters will have you on the edge of your seat for this one. This is my honest, voluntary review of an advanced reader copy of this book.

Another mystery for detective to a baker, has a serial killer been set free?

Gripping tale , a past and present narration of an unmarried mother and her son. But how is this connected to current and past murders by a released serial killer. Lots of surprise s and a brilliant twist.

DCI Arla Baker was called to a body found inside a derelict power station. The body is of a women from an unsolved murder case a decade ago.
This case takes on a meticulous search of past cases.

As I wrote in my update, I was soooo disappointed in this book. The main character is supposed to be this smart detective but in this story she couldn't see what was in front of her eyes until the killers slapped her in the face with it.
