p.40 Children ... will learn more from engaging with their peers in discussion of the stories read aloud and shared than they will in the sterility of the bottom group .... missing out on the many opportunities to read and write that are part of learning in a good clasroom. No child becomes a reader by stumbling through a book -- even a good one -- treating each word as if it were an obstacle to be conquered.
