"Decea bore the gifts and markings of the Elemental Dragon of Air, and clarity was her birthright. She stopped imposing forms on the clouds of her mind, and allowed her thoughts to wander, that she might better see the true shape of the world."
When the Dragon-Blood Decea finds herself unexpectedly in the small fishing village of Elknell, she quickly realizes something is amiss with its living residents — and its dead.
Decea sets out to find an answer, along with a mismatched group of companions and uncovers more than she could ever have expected.
A new Exalted novella made possible by the backers of the What Fire Has Wrought Kickstarter.
This novella (which I read as the POD edition) was part of the Kickstarter for the Dragon-Blooded book for 3rd Edition. As such its main protagonists are two Dragon-Blooded characters, one of them a beastman Lost Egg fire aspect completely new to being Exalted and the other a somewhat more experienced (former) air-aspected Wanasaan Exorcist (a new group in Ex3). It is an interesting take to star non-Dynast characters, as the Dynasty is the defining face of the Terrestrial Exalted (for those who don't play Exalted: that's the same thing as Dragon-Blooded) as well as having the story's events take place in the North, far off the beaten tracks of the familiar game world. I liked that as it shows a more grounded setting where not everybody is familiar with what the Exalted are or how the greater world works, while still showing off some of the capabilities of Exalts as compared to the mortals around them.
I read it because I was interested in how Exalted setting would be used/portrayed in a novel. And it was good for that. But I'm not sure if I'd have enjoyed it enough to finish it if I wasn't interested in Exalted.
