Sometimes our dreams are right before our eyes.Ashley’s been taught all her life to find a nice Mormon boy and get married in a temple. That’s easier said than done living in rural Michigan, where members of her church are few and far between.Ashley drives each morning to the University of Michigan to study pre-med, while her non-member boyfriend Paul, the boy next door, heads the other direction to attend Michigan State University. Each evening they see each other in the barn to feed the animals and talk of the future. But when Ashley meets Caleb, a nice, med-school student who served as a missionary and is ready to settle down, what starts as casual flirting quickly turns to something more and Ashley fights the undeniable attraction they have. Because she’s still in love with Paul.As she tries to convince herself she’s not ready to get serious with either man, Caleb becomes more involved in the farm life she loves, Paul becomes interested in the gospel she can’t live without, and Ashley realizes she’s going to have a tough choice to make.
I’ve read most every novel by this author, and she continues to blow me away. This is by far my favorite one. It’s controversial, but that’s what I love about it. There’s a love triangle going on, that’s for sure. And Ashley, she is just awful to those two boys in the way she drags them on, because she loves them both, but something is telling her that she is not ready for marriage. Let me tell you, I didn’t know who she was going to pick, not even up to the second to last chapter. About 2/3 of the way through, I knew what direction I wanted her to go, but man, it was so hard to decide because both boys were amazing and perfect for her, but in different ways.
Seriously though. I loved this novel. I bet a lot of people will find it unsettling because she kisses both boys and flirts with both of them in front of both of them, AND the boys have a mutual respect for each other and become friends. Seriously twisted! The novel is clean, nothing but kisses and non-descriptive make-out scenes that are just kisses, but, man, some of the situations are just so hot. Even though Ashley pulls these poor guys along, I admire her standards, all of their standards, and I love how responsible Ashley is and all the love she has for her family and her horses and other people. She’s just conflicted about her choices, which I think reader can relate too.
This is the first 3 star rating I've ever given to one of Julie Spencer's books, but that ending? I delved into The Farmer's Daughter with gusto, and although it was a little unconventional to be seriously dating two men at the same time, it worked. It was a very Team Paul vs. Team Caleb sort of thing, and I'd chosen the man I wanted her to end up with, but would've been happy with either. Then that last chapter absolutely killed the book for me. I'd stayed up late to finish the book and was so immensely disappointed by the ending. (Saturday's Warrior, anyone?) I was seriously considering giving it only two stars, but the rest of the book was so good! Am I going to read more of Julie's books? Yes, of course, because she's a fantastic author. In fact, I already have the next two downloaded. This one just felt like a bit of a bump in the road to me.
So I enjoyed this story of young love a lot but the twist made me feel a bit grr! I feel bad knocking a star off but I didn’t enjoy the twist. Ashley, the main character, finds herself in a love triangle. She’s almost 19 at the beginning of the story and it follows her over just over a year period of time. There are some really great plot points that pop up and we see her grow closer to each of the young men she is attracted to. I had no idea who she would choose, all the way up to the last chapter. The journey was great. There was just a surprise. I don’t want to ruin anything so I won’t say more. I love this author’s writing a lot. I’m happy there’s a promise of a sequel.
As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, I was excited to read this book. It truly falls within the Christian romance trope and is not preachy. I had expected more praying and reading scripture, which did not happen despite the family being active in the Church.
I would have given five stars for this well written story, but I found Ashley a little annoying and not very deep. While she wasn’t truly superficial, she was still so very young despite her maturity on the farm.
Loved both Paul and Caleb. The twist at the end blew me away.
Started at 4 stars for the writing. Slid to 3 when the MC knowingly dangled two good men instead of choosing one, and kept doing it forever. Slid to 2 stars when the promised missionary lessons passed in a few paragraphs, and "the only thing keeping me from making a decision" was resolved but no decision appeared. Hit one for the ridiculous last-minute ending. Finally decided two was an average.
I guess chose this rating because I thought this story was cute but it just seemed to drag on too much. It really was a kind of too much kissing and not much drama.
I read this book in two days. It was a very enjoyable Christian read. Julie makes it very clear the high standards that Mormons place on purity and chastity. Love the characters in the story. Looking forward to the next book. I hope we get to read more about them.
This story had a love triangle, which I’m not the biggest fan of. Paul and Caleb seemed like pretty great guys. I didn’t like Ashley at all. The ending was weird and I didn’t like it.
Ashley, Paul, and Caleb, an inexplicable love triangle. How could she choose just one. Add a twist and a surprise ending and you have an unforgettable story.
