Two Books, Each a Long Action Plan

Don't misread the title of this as I did. It is not a “self-love and confidence” workbook. Rather, it is a combination of two books, one a 10-week plan to help you achieve self-love and the other a 30-day self-confidence plan that the authors call a workbook.

The self-love portion offers short articles on different aspects of self-love for each week along with affirmations, action steps (including meditation and self-hypnosis), and reflection exercises. I did find each week’s articles to be interesting reads as they try to subtly shift your perceptions about how you see yourself and your life. For instance, one article that I found particularly fascinating was how you can see the same activity as a reward or punishment. I wasn't wild about some affirmations as I thought they were overlong and unfocused, but I did like the self-hypnosis scripts.

The confidence “workbook” is not a true workbook, which I see as something that has little actual text but lots of space for you to write as you work through exercises. What this is instead is a 30-day plan to help you figure out the roots of your lack of confidence and aspires to help you become more confident or take more confident actions. They divide the plan into 3-day increments that are each given a chapter. A quick glance at the table of contents shows that most chapters go over topics that would be important for developing confidence, like moving from self-doubt to self-trust and transforming negative thoughts.

One topic doesn’t really fit with self-confidence, to my view; that's shyness. For some reason, the authors made this one of the very early topics to explore. First of all, I don't agree that shyness inherently means a lack of self-confidence. I think it is simply a personality trait, like being outgoing (which no one seems to fault). In other words, I don't see it as a problem. It can just be who you are. The authors don't agree with me, but I think you need to work on self-confidence for internal reasons first before you start thinking about how your confidence relates to others. If they had to have this section, I think it should have been later on after you do some good work on yourself. I thought that each of the chapters in this section was somewhat disjointed. I didn't always feel like the authors made the connection between the different elements of the chapter, relating the “head” information to the exercises and action steps. This section suffers from some grave errors of grammar, punctuation, and usage; this didn’t seem to be quite as problematic in the other one.

All in all, these two books in this collection are uneven. I think there are certainly nuggets and pearls of wisdom here, especially in the first book, but it has some drawbacks as I detailed above so I don't feel I can wholeheartedly recommend it.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
