This is book one of the Academy for Supernatural Felons and follows two sisters, Lily and Dahlia, who are working undercover for the Myst Mages, a top secret investigative arm of the supernatural police. They are going undercover in Shadowridge Academy, using different names, as Grace who is a half witch half vampire, and Nadia who is a witch. The Academy is a reform school for inmates, almost a country club compared to some of the other prisons they could be sent to. It has some odd rules, no mail, no visitors, and no contact whatsoever. The inmates are supposed to work on their rehabilitation and are guided to change their ways to enable them to be a useful part of society.

Two other undercover operatives were sent into the academy a few months ago, but they failed to keep to a pre-arranged contact plan. They were put in place to investigate the disappearances of inmates, by the request of nine families who have lost contact with their children and been put off or delayed from getting any actual answers, over the past year. The reasons given are that it would interfere with the inmate’s progress and program! Something fishy is going on and the sisters have been sent to find the other two operatives and then get out.

What they find is a very basic set of lessons each morning, in topics covered in early education classes at school. There seems to be no instruction on how inmates can improve themselves nor any points or marks to gain towards a good behaviour early release. The academy has a weird motto, ‘Reform is the path to freedom, and freedom is the path to reform’. Shortly after they arrive, a girl in their bunk disappears during the night, without Grace even noticing, which since she is half vampire, she definitely should have. The bunk leader tells them the girl has been transferred out, meaning she has been sent to a minimum security prison before release, as she has proven she is reformed. Only problem is they always do it at night and all the person’s belongings are left behind!

One of the sisters acts as a bit of a trouble maker, but soon finds out that the punishments in this academy are very severe and even weird. Nadia soon realises that her blood is being drugged and both quickly realise that a cult like rule is operated at the academy and they are being brainwashed. There is a lot more going on in and under the academy, as they begin to find out, but they are going to have to stick around to find out the full extent of what is really happening and how far this goes. There is a bit of romance added into the mix, as one of them finds a bond mate, whilst already having another they are in a relationship with. This will save their bacon when they get discovered sneaking about!

This is an easy to read story, that really flowed well and I read it straight through. There is plenty of intrigue and action to keep your interest and two sisters that have worked for the Myst Mages since they were sixteen, getting them away from their father, who also uses a lot of sayings, like a cult. They learn more about their mother and the fact she had four bond mates, three of whom have either been killed or disappeared, leaving only their father behind. There are a lot more secrets to be learned and their training allows them to still access some magic, even with dampening bracelets against magic use for witches and drugged blood for vampires. I am really looking forward to reading the next book in this series and I can’t wait! I received an ARC copies of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Maximum Security Magic
by Aries.Pisces

Corinne O'Flynn is known for her intriguing fantasy and paranormal suspense stories. Her latest work, Maximum Security Magic doesn't disappoint. Inmates are disappearing from Shadowridge Academy, a reform school for supernatural felons. Sisters Lily (Nadia) and Dahlia (Grace) are operatives for Myst Mages, who have been sent undercover to discover the whereabouts of the Myst Mage operatives sent in before them, as well as the missing inmates. What they find is a reform school that isn't really designed to reform with a system of odd rules and punishments. The premise is a good one and is very clearly and carefully crafted. The characters are well thought out and well developed. The book is an easy and entertaining read that has the reader looking forward to Book 2.

Our heroines are undercover trying to figure out what happened to the earlier investigative teams.

This is book one of the series. No prior reading is required.

This is an urban fantasy story that manages to combine two challenging settings, prison and an academy, by using a reform school. This means we have even more challenging personalities to deal with. The story is well written and makes maximum use of both the setting and the characters. Our heroines have their hands full and that provides us with a fast paced plot that has lots of mystery, twists and turns. I found the story to be highly enjoyable and am definitely looking forward to the next book in the series.

Highly recommended.

To be perfectly honest I chose this book to read because the author has the same name as me, Corinne, except mine is my second name, named after my dad's sister Corinne, although my dad made a mistake or the Registrar did, when registering my birth, so I am Corrinne.
The book I may add was a lot more interesting than my little story, and I have already started reading it's sequel. The story revolves around two sisters who have entered, undercover, a detention centre for witches, wizards and vampires to try to find out what has happened to the two previous undercover agents that have disappeared. There is something definitely very wrong, and to keep their guise going, they have to pretend not to know each other.

DNF - quit at 13%
I just couldn't get into this. I especially didn't like the flip-flopping point of views between the 2 sisters, it was a bit repetitive, getting both their opinions of the same event back to back so to speak. The fact that they both have guys waiting on them to get out of this pickle, kind of hurt my reading enjoyment of who they end up with as a romantic interest. I also felt that it moved way to slowly, and really didn't have much for world building to help balance me as a reader. There were little hints or tidbits given as it goes, but not enough to keep me from feeling lost. Others may like this, but it wasn't for me.

At my age (approaching 60), life is way to short & my time is to important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.

This was a fun read. Never mind the current prison story fad - this goes beyond the fad to shine on its own. This novel may be short but it reads like a combination of 21 Jump Street, Wiseguy and Cynthia Eden's Purgatory series, with all the possibilities and problems and sheer mayhem of that worst of possible assignments - in the emotional hell of high school mixed with prison. Nadia and Grace (no real names, please) - gird your loins!

This is a good series so far. I would recommend reading the two prequels first. It will help with understanding the sisters. We start to bring in more characters and learn more about the girls parents. The girls' go undercover in a juvenile prison to see what happened to some of their team members. They are learning that their are many mysteries. That punishment is beyond imagination. Can they figure it out before something happens to them? You will want to keep reading to see what happens.

This book grabbed me from the first page and I just couldn’t put it down. Two sisters trying to uncover the mystery that is Shadoweidge Academy and looking for their lost team members at the same time keeps the book fast paced and doesn’t give the reader a dull moment. It’s a great start to the series and I’m looking forward to the next one!

I liked the idea of this book, but it does not have any real substance. The main characters (who I never could keep straight) seem very unprepared to do the jobs they have supposedly been doing for years. They never seem to have a plan, so never really make much progress in their mission.

Part of me wants to read the next book to find out what happens, but I dread the idea of plodding through the juvenile writing.

Maximum Security Magic is the first book in the Academy for Supernatural Felons and is about two sisters who go undercover to find out why the inmates are disappearing. The characters are interesting the storyline is good and held my attention from beginning to end. My only complaint is that I have to wait six months until book two comes out. A bit slow going for me, and the characters were not well developed, I kept mixing the sisters, could not get a sense of their real relationship, or who they are individually.
