A mysterious message beckons Jack to a clandestine 'meet', but something is off.
The code is identical to one his team used back in his Union days.
When no one shows, he and Sara find themselves drawn into an investigation to uncover who sent the message... and why.
It isn't long before they find a trafficking ring that snatches women from shelters and wipes their memories, all with the hope of selling them to the rich and powerful as 'wives'.
But this is bigger than just a gang of criminals. There's an organization that stretches across both sides of the law with connections to elected officials at the very top.
I enjoyed the original DEADLANDS DRIFTER book and appreciated it's low level gritty science fiction storytelling. However, I think I like its sequel a good deal more. DEADLANDS WANDERER is basically what happens if you combine the original book with TAKEN. Burner and Sara get recruited by Burner's friend Judy to take down a human trafficking ring. Women are having their memories erased at shelters and then get sold to high paying customers. I really enjoyed this story and watching Burner dismantle the thoroughly hateable baddies. I also like Judy a great deal. Great character.
Not sure what to think of this one. The first book in the series was entertaining, different from the last set of books i read in the Renegade universe. The space spooks was an interesting concept, and kept me entertained in book one. Book two, well, i had issues.
Long-short, there was a ridiculous amount of discrepancies and frankly just plain odd content.
We're +2000 years into future, and we went from plasma rifles to standard gunpowder guns. They have FTL travel between star systems, but you can still jimmy a hover car door opened with a bent piece of wire. Concrete and rebar in space station, a building with a roof and basement, akso in a space station, and that's just the scenery.
The whole premise behind the human traffic ring made no sense. Somehow, kidnapping and selling woman into sex slavery and arranged marriages was profitable enough for this ring to have millions of credit to afford high tech compounds, weapons, and high expensive medical equipment.
The there's Hank, an active Union operative, that allowed Jack, a civilian, to out right pass lethal judgement on people without a fair trial. Not only allowed, but helped out killing a few thugs himself.
I know the authors painted these thugs to be despicable people, but Jack was in law enforcement. He spent a decade or more building up the evidence to arrest people. Yes, things got ugly, and he was forced gi retire, but that does not change who Jack is. So why is he comfortable killing hired thugs, who he admittedly mentions they might be ignorant of who exactly they are protecting. Several of these are.just rent-a-cops, hired to guard a bldg. The 9-to-5 security detail, and Jack and company just dispatches them without a thought.
I'm not sure Chaney and Clarke really thought out the motives of certain characters, or the ramifications to their actions. Sometimes, certain passages felt as they were written because they sounded "cool", but mainly had the effect of throwing me out of the story as i thought, " WTF".
I haven't given up on the series yet, but i series hope the next book is better, or at least, as consistent to plot and characters as the first book.
J.N. Chaney's _Deadland Wonderer_ receives four stars from me. I enjoyed this one as much as the first, but the ending I did not like.
So this was an recorded book read by Scott Aiello. Was I not paying attention in the first book and didn't notice that he read with extreme enthusiasm for the fight scenes? Either he changed that or I didn't notice, but this bothered me. It seems over done. However, the reading is excellent. His voices are good and distinct. And how he interprets the characters, I feel is on target. I recommend him.
The book. I felt the story was really good. I liked the crime. What I didn't like was how they resolved it.
Recommended: Yes, it is still a good book and a great listen.
Well another great storyline so hence the the title lol.. Plenty of action and banter and a bit more deep thought on how to proceed.. What a great idea of the crooks best watch out or the real crooks of today may pinch your ideas lol.. Really looking forward to Deadland Sentinel hopefully won't be too long before it comes out
An action packed adventure from the beginning to the end. This is a great series. If you like Jack Reacher, you will certainly like Jack Burner. This series ends each book satisfactorily with just enough promise of a good continuation in the next book. Highly recommend this series!
If you spliced the DNA from Perry Mason, Jack Reacher and Magnum PI , you would come close to cloning Jack Burner! Jack and his friends battle corruption you could pull from today’s headline, only with some futuristic twists. Well thought out storyline and smoothly written.
Got annoyed with the retelling of the same tale with no additional useful information or benefit from a different character's POV and the hack writer's "Three weeks earlier" trope repeated endlessly. It's almost like we were going for word count here and the author said "Screw it - just repeat the same shit a few times."
Would have been much better if just all told from the MC's POV IMO.
Perhaps just a personal preference, but in movies (and now in books), I don’t care for numerous flashbacks. A flashback, sure, but this one had too many for me. Still well worth reading, but the constant flashbacks in the early part of the book really slowed down the pace… and just not my favorite literary structure.
The fight sequences in this series/book are phenomenal, but the sci-fi seems a bit shoe horned in. Fans of the techno-thriller are going to love these books while the sci-fi lovers are going to classify it as pretty good to ok.
The action was pretty much non-stop throughout the book. Good fun. I like how the Deadland Drifter team is growing with interesting characters. Cannot wait for the next book for many reasons!
I love love LOVE this series! I won’t spoil book 2, but this give us another dose of Jack Reacher/Mission Impossible in a near future setting. Bring on book 3!
Enjoyed the characters and their involvement with us the readers, you can not put people in this world without having them evolve into characters you can relate to.
This was trash. Damn near everything in combat description came close to or broke the fourth wall due to the obvious lack of understanding of circumstances involved by the writer.
This was a decent outlet for women who are understandably angry about human trafficking, etc, but it seemed more like revenge fulfillment by a Karen that read about the problem but had zero actual experience nor research into the topic nor what it would take for the characters to pull off what they were attempting.
I like the Chaney-verse for the most part, but it's gone downhill very, very fast over the last couple years. This was the reverse-pinnacle of the whole thing, IMO.
Just to be clear, human trafficking is a very serious problem worthy of deep exploration, but this was far from helpful.
