Battered at Breakfast

Rate this book
There’s a body in room twenty-seven, and no, I don’t believe he’ll be joining us for breakfast.

Meet Jenna Sweet, owner of the newly opened Sweet Bed and Breakfast, located in a small southern town in Florida. She loves pastries, her curious cat Daisy, and spending time with her bestie Alex, who has a knack for running through husbands like Jenna runs through desserts (quickly!). Life is sweet, as it should be.

But when a battered body shows up in a vacant room at Jenna’s cozy bed and breakfast, her reputation as a business owner falls into question. She can’t help but to wonder if this has something to do with that dastardly fellow who owns a competing bed and breakfast down the street. Is it possible that he could have been the one to cook this up?

Now, with her bed and breakfast's reputation on the line, Jenna must slice into this mystery and solve it before all her plans become spoiled… But not before she enjoys a bit of brunch!

When you’re running a bed and breakfast, you never know who is going to come strolling into town looking for a place to stay for the night. Crooks and tourists, old and young, good and evil… they all come to stay at the Sweet Bed and Breakfast, and there’s almost always a mystery to solve.

Recipes for food and drinks used in this book are included. Enjoy!

B. M. Gold writes clean mystery with a sprinkle of dry humor. This book does not contain cussing or graphic imagery.

Unsatisfying Mystery Novella

This murder mystery is a novella, the first of a new series. In general, I think novellas are a bad format for mysteries of any sort because they do not allow the time needed to build suspense or have red herrings and blind alleys. Often, too, they don't allow for enough characters to be introduced to have a wide enough suspect pool. Unfortunately, this book fell victim to these faults of the mystery novella. This would have been annoying enough to me—as I do love a good culinary cozy mystery with mounting suspense, red herrings, and blind alleys—but this book had a further problem. To me, a murder mystery doesn't truly start until the body drops, and that didn't happen in this book until the 42% mark! Yes, the murder this book is supposed to be about did not occur until almost halfway through it. I think the author did this to set up the series, the recurring characters, and the setting. But it just didn’t work! Already with the novella-length story, there would have been problems with enough time to build that suspense and have blind alleys, but to shorten the murder mystery part of the book even more makes it feel like it's barely about the mystery. By the way, I figured out who the bad guy was just as soon as he was mentioned, for some reason. As this is a culinary mystery, the author did include some recipes mentioned in the book, like ones for lemonade, hard candy, and a whipped iced frappe. These are all relatively simple, and unfortunately, the short ingredient lists were out of order with the directions. All in all, I found this to be a very disappointing mystery.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Jenna Sweet is finally bringing her dreams to life. She gets her new bed and breakfast up and running and booked to capacity. Her hated competition even shows up to try and make her grand opening go bad. And boy does it go wrong when a body is discovered in the one empty room she has left.
Super fun book! I was able to read it quickly, so I didn’t have to toss and turn trying to figure out who the killer was when I should have been sleeping! Btw, surprising! And I love sharing the same last name as the main character. Even our first initial is the same!
