A desperate journey to an unknown land. A selfless act of kindness. A marriage of convenience.
Davina MacQueen yearns for a loving family. After fleeing from her conniving father in Scotland, she arrives in Bear Grass Springs, Montana Territory, with hope and determination. Soon, she is an integral part of daily life on Sorcha and Frederick’s ranch. Unfortunately, the giant of a man, Slims, is to be her tutor in the kitchen. He’s intolerable. Insufferable. And all too attractive for her liking.
Slims has no time for teaching Miss Sorcha’s cousin. Against his will, he begins to yearn for the time alone with her, even if it’s obvious she loathes him. What he wouldn’t give to trace his fingers through her silky, golden hair and hear her laugh.
When they are stranded in the middle of a blizzard, he is shocked by her dedication to his wellbeing. Upon arrival in town, she is threatened by vicious gossips, and he realizes he will do anything in his power to protect her. If only she would accept his love as readily as she accepts his proposal.
Will Davina learn to trust in a Slims’s love again, or will she allow the fears from her past to keep her alone?
Immerse yourself in 1880’s Bear Grass Springs, Montana Territory!
Ramona is a historical romance author who loves to immerse herself in research as much as she loves writing. A native of Montana, every day she marvels that she gets to live in such a beautiful place. When she’s not writing, her favorite pastimes are fly fishing the cool clear streams of a Montana river, hiking in the mountains, and spending time with family and friends.
Ramona’s heroines are strong, resilient women, the type of women you’d love to have as your best friend. Her heroes are loyal and honorable, the type of men you’d love to meet or bring home to introduce to your family for Sunday dinner. She hopes her stories bring the past alive and allow you to forget the outside world for a while.
A chattel most of her life, Davina takes the chance of escaping her father's household before he can marry her off to a second unwelcome husband. Despite her low self-esteem, she nevertheless has stamina and gumption as she crosses a foreign ocean to take refuge with an unknown relative. Aware of the enmity between the two families, Davina brings proof of her identity, not realising that more than one wound will be healed. Slims is no stranger to betrayal and brokenness and is therefore very cautious, even aggressive when the strange but beautiful woman is discovered trying to walk in the middle of winter to his boss' ranch. This novel brought to my awareness once again that a person cannot accept the love of another unless you love yourself first, and Davina had a hard time believing that she had any worth after a lifetime of emotional abuse. This sweet story speaks of the healing power of love and learning to believe in oneself. It is well written, is a standalone and comes to a happy conclusion. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
Another wonderful story from the Blue Grass Springs Saga. Slims, age 51, is the foreman on Frederick’s ranch. He’s never been married, having been betrayed early in life by a woman who helped have his entire family murdered. Davina MacQueen has fled Scotland hoping she will be welcomed by her cousin Sorcha. She’s known nothing but emotional and verbal abuse all her life.
Slims and Davina meet when he picks her up on her way to the ranch. They immediately distrust each other, and continue to deny their attraction. Sparks fly whenever they interact.
This is a tender story of deep healing and learning to trust. I felt their fears and emotions as they grew to love. Once again Ramona captures the richness of the McKinnon Family and the early days in the Montana Territory. I really enjoy this series and recommend it to anyone who likes western historical romance.
I received an ARC to review: this is my first book in the Bear Grass Springs series and it's number 10! Set in Montana in the late 1800's when medicine was rustic and society was conservative, Ramona focuses her lens on Davina and Slims - she magnifies the frame so the reader has a full screen view as the flame of love is lit and how it shakes and shudders as emotional baggage and unexpressed expectations rage in gusts and threaten to snuff it out. Their love story is raw, deep, intense and beautiful to witness.
Language - no swearing, but for readers to whom it matters, be advised there is blasphemy. Sex - general allusion to, and expression of, desire for the intimacy between husband and wife - nothing sexually explicit. There is one moment of pre-marital cuddling (in bed) which is non sexual but may offend some readers. Triggers - verbally abusive spouse; judgemental preachers.
Davina came to Montana Territory from Scotland to escape her father who was insisting she enter into a loveless marriage in search of her cousin Sorcha. What she found was a loving and accepting extended family who loved her unconditionally and a strong man who loves her for the amazing person she is. Can she overcome feeling she is unlovable and unworthy of happiness to accept love? This is book 10 in the Bear Grass Springs series and the first of the series that I've read. I definitely want to read the rest of this fabulous series.
I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest and voluntary review
I received an arc and the opinions and views are my own. If you loved the MacKinnon family you will love the cousin Davina MacQueen. She runs away from Scotland to come to America to meet her cousin Sorcha and like the MacKinnon’s ends up in trouble. A wonderful read with a twist added in for more trouble. I would recommend this book to all. I truly enjoyed reading this book and cannot wait for the next one.
