"Our world is more than we can see, more than what we have discovered and more than what we can imagine." - A cryptid investigator. This casebook will present a wide variety of winged cryptid eyewitness reports that I have personally received and directly researched over the past three decades. I also update the investigations conducted by Phantoms & Monsters Fortean Research that pertain to the Chicago area winged humanoid phenomena and other unexplained winged entities. In Autumn 1988, I was asked to investigate a series of loud screams at a Boy Scout camp in south central Pennsylvania. The reports of troops suddenly fleeing the camp were becoming a concern. The red-eyed winged humanoid, that myself and two other witnesses encountered that weekend, suddenly changed my perspective on the unexplained. I wanted answers and the truth. Over 30 years of research and investigations are offered in this book for your own conclusions.
Lon Strickler is a fortean researcher, author and intuitive who writes and mentors on a variety of subjects.
Lon is a resident of Hanover, Pennsylvania. At an early age, Lon realized that he had the ability to sense spiritual energy and found this useful in the field when conducting investigations. Most of his early field work concentrated on spiritual activity at historical locations, in particular the Gettysburg & Antietam battlefields.
In 1981, Lon experienced a "Bigfoot" encounter near Sykesville, MD while fishing on the south branch of the Patapsco River. As a result of the incident, he included cryptids as an important part of his research.
Lon started the 'Phantoms and Monsters' blog in 2005, which has steadily grown in popularity and read daily by thousands of paranormal enthusiasts, investigators and those seeking the truth.
Lon's research has been featured on hundreds of online media sources. Several of these published reports have been presented on various television segments, including The History Channel's 'Ancient Aliens',' Syfy's 'Paranormal Witness', 'Faked or Faked: Paranormal Files,' & Destination America's 'Monsters and Mysteries in America.' As well, he has been interviewed on several radio broadcasts, including multiple guest appearances on 'Coast to Coast AM.' He was also featured on Destination America's 'Monsters and Mysteries in America' television show for 'The Sykesville Monster' episode.
In 2014 Lon and Sean Forker founded 'Arcane Radio' in which they both host with Butch Witkowski.
Obviously from the title the book deals with cryptids that have some form of wings. There's more of them that I thought before I read the book. I think it would have been interesting if the author would have added cryptids of mythology, though.
The author does one really good thing to do and that is to define the term. I picked up something in college that said when two people want to discuss something (esp. like cryptids) then it's really necessary for them to be working with the same definition of the term. Otherwise, there is no real communication that will happen.
The entries in the book are eye-witness accounts of people seeing different very odd winged beings and how they reacted to them. There is, of course, the Mothman. Others including things that are humanoid and things that are slightly humanoid but not fully.
Their size often seems to be around the size of a tall human. The wings often resemble those of bats. The manner of their flight is very odd, though, as the author goes into how many of them flap their wings only sometimes, seeming to propel themselves at times without any wing movement on their part.
The book also gives examples of times when the cryptid suddenly vanishes. This brings up the question of whether or not they are fully of this dimension/reality or whether they may exist primarily in another reality and only at times 'bleed through' into our reality.
Some very interesting ones are those that seem to be dinosaur holdovers such as the Pterosaurs and ones like that. There is also the Thunderbird of Native American (First People) history.
There are some, though, that really are very, very hard to believe and those tend to occur late in the book.
One thing: the review is based on the Kindle version. As is often done, books in the Kindle version lack illustrations found in the printed version which I think is unfortunate.
Overall a very interesting book. As with any book like this, either the stories are all made up or the stories are real. If they are real then the topic needs a lot more study.
This was a decent enough collection of stories and reported sightings of various winged beings or creatures. There is a good bit of follow up to the 'Chicago Mothman' sightings covered in an earlier book by Strickler, but he also branched out to things like pterosaurs, gargoyles, dragons, thunderbird, etc.
There are the occasional typos, but nothing too egregious. A couple times some reports Strickler includes (by quoting the emails or such he received) sound so similar that they almost seem like duplicates; once I had to actually check and make sure I hadn't accidentally gone back a page on my e-reader and started re-reading the earlier passage. These instances made me think he either wasn't careful in editing, or else he has had people give him fake accounts that he did not recognize. Obviously he can't control other people, but it did bug me a bit.
This was another great book about winged cryptid sightings by author Lon Strickler. Lon is a veteran researcher who has written several books and has been seen on several great shows like Monsters and Mysteries in America and Ancient Aliens. His Phantoms and Monsters blog is filled with great encounter tales. This book is full of sightings of several types of flying cryptids from all over that definitely made an impression on those who have seen them. Another great read from a veteran researcher. Thanks to the witnesses for sharing their stories.
An interesting collection of encounters people have experienced with unknown winged creatures.
I have read some of these stories before, however there are plenty of new entries to keep it fresh. Some of these events have even occurred in my area!
Definitely worth your time if you are interested in the unusual, such as the Mothman.
These true accounts are very interesting. I have always kept an open mind. Most people live and function in the tip of the iceberg of reality. The stories in this book will definitely widen the scope of that reality.
