Raising Them Up: Parenting for Christians

Rate this book
Most parents want a book that will “fix their child” in three easy steps, in 30 days or less. While understandable, this expectation will never work. The problem lies far more with us, the parents, than it does with our child. If we don’t understand that truth, we will only remain frustrated and disappointed with our child. The far greater need is to fundamentally change our own hearts and minds as parents. As a principle, that simply MUST happen before any change will come for our youth. Christian parents may know a lot of Bible verses, yet don’t have a Biblical theology of parenting. Here’s the big parenting is discipleship. Your child is learning from you. You are the teacher. Far more is caught than taught in parenting. Children listen to what you say, but they watch how you live. When you are slack in dealing with character issues in your own life, it short circuits your ability to effectively reach your child’s heart. In Raising Them Up, you will - A heart check for parents - The world of “techno-parenting” - How to teach purity - Helping the difficult child - Parenting by grace - Home-based apologetics and more! It’s not about gimmicks…it’s about God – His inspired, inerrant, infallible, timeless truths. There are lots of other books out there that will teach you how to count to three, hold your breath, snap your wrist with a rubber band, and hand out stickers as a way to change your rebellious child. With enough tips, tricks, and methods, perhaps you can learn the perfect approach to timeouts or some magic cure that will solve bickering, sibling rivalry, laziness, back-talking, media addiction, lying, stealing, bad attitudes, apathy, angry outbursts, rebellion, inattention, or any other number of “fruits” that annoy, inconvenience, and embarrass us. But if you care enough to risk having to make changes in your own way of thinking and living, then let’s walk together on this path of learning to powerfully and prayerfully parent our children after the ways of God.

Israel desires to see God's people learn to think and live Biblically.

Aiming for both the head and the heart, Israel's goal is to challenge audiences to take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ. In his words, "God's Word applies to all areas of life. There is not one facet of our existence which does not fall under the direct claim of Lordship by Jesus Christ. This includes how we spend our money, what entertainment we consume, how we educate our children, how we use our time, etc. All of life must be understood from within a Biblical worldview."

This was the parenting book I didn’t know I needed. It had a great mix of principles to follow along with specific examples of how they were worked out in the authors family. It’s about parenting being discipleship. The last chapter “Parenting By Grace” was very powerful and a good reminder that it is all about God and not me.

This book is very convicting and I highly recommend it! It’s well written and easy to read, but still in-depth and thought provoking. It’s one I will be revisiting often and also sharing with my friends. Thank you for sharing your wisdom, Israel and Brooke.

I think I have all of Israel Wayne’s books (so far) and they’re all amazing reads. This book is no exception. It’s not like most parenting books I’ve read where the “tips” are repetitive and far-fetched. This book has a lot of practical and applicable principles to help make sure we are aiming our little arrows in the right direction. It’s been a blessing and what I needed to read in this season to recharge and remember my purpose. I recommend any book by Israel, especially this one!!

Know what you believe about male and female roles and what your theology of family is before reading this book. It has a lot of wisdom to glean from it but parts need to be read with a grain of salt. If you get offended easily by very conservative Christians then don’t read it. If you are open to learning from Christians who might be different from you then it is a good book to pick up and read.

For the most part, this was pretty good. There were definitely some pretty extreme concepts but I wouldn’t disagree with any completely to any extent. I enjoyed the book and had many things to take away from
