Read it as a stand-alone or as Book 5 in the Prince Martin Epic Series—Tales to Inspire Kids to be Brave, Loyal, and True:
When Brandon Hale was a young boy, he lived in South America. It was a great place to be a kid, and his mom let him play outside as much as he wanted. He had a dog named Okie, a slingshot, and an awesome tree house his dad built. The tree was full of pink mangoes, jabbering parrots, and fat iguanas! When he was older, his family moved home to Oklahoma, and he began second grade. His favorite classes were Reading and History. He still got to spend a lot of time outdoors, and sometimes his uncles would take him hunting—with their falcons! His favorite tales were Treasure Island, The Swiss Family Robinson, Old Yeller, and The Hobbit.
After finishing 19 years(!) of school, Brandon went to work as a lawyer. In 2001, a very beautiful lady agreed to marry Brandon. Now they have five great kids and live on the Oklahoma plains. Regarding Prince Martin, Brandon didn’t even know he existed until he popped into his head one day! And when he had to go overseas for a long time in 2015, Brandon would tell his young son Prince Martin stories on the phone. In fact, the boy named some of the most important characters! Now Brandon wakes up real early every morning (when the house is unusually quiet) and writes about Prince Martin.
Ok, this is by far my favorite Prince Martin novel! And I call it novel because at this point the books are starting to feel like they are. This is also the longest book in the series with iver 30 chapters. At first I found that disappointing because I liked the fact I could get through these quickly, but with the backstory and the lore included....the extra length was necessary. We got to see the history of Sir Ray and his pack. It was a sad and wondeful tale and felt like I was reading an ancient fairytale. I liked the old school illustrations and I loved how it kind of showed how history is sometimes forgotten. How old monuments stand the test of time even when others forgot why they were built and by whom. I have ways been fascinated by ancient unknown cultures and monuments and this was just such a beautiful simple way of showing that archeological process and how some traditions are born, such a pilgrima suddenly making journeys to the Centaurs grave. It also got into the bad life experiences that sometimes can turn a person evil, even though they did not start out that way. Thats a physiological and deep issue, but the book made it simple and thought provocative. LOVED it!
Adult themes inside. My son is only five years old but he was able to follow the story. If you made it this far into the story you know what's inside. I enjoyed reading this book to my son just as much as he enjoyed listening it. Great book, great series.
5th in the series of "Prince Martin" books that try to teach positive values to kids through fantasy stories. This one is the longest book in the series so far. The sing-song rhymes of the prose are a bit annoying, but it is a good story.
This wasn’t our favorite Prince Martin - too much back story to keep track of. I really wish this series didn’t rhyme. 😂 It makes it hard to read aloud.
