A desperate battle has left the Morrigan crippled in a distant system with no backup and little hope. Outnumbered, outgunned, damaged, and stuck, they must find a way to survive the conflict by any means necessary. Captain Markel and his crew are left with no option other than fighting to the end. As their goal shifts to one of pure survival, they prepare for what very well may be the end.

In the last book, we left the Morrigan in dire straights surrounded by ervas starships and getting the heck pounded out of him (yeah, this ship is a "him"). They way Captain Merkel got into this mess is by trusting his supposed allies, the Gold Empire. They agreed to send to ships along with the Morrigan to get the data from this secret lab and then put it out of commission. They thought there wouldn't be any enemy contact since they didn't believe the ervas knew the location of the secret lab.
They were wrong and Captain Merkel was going to pay a steep price for being so gullible and trusting of the Gold Empire. He was faced with a couple of immediate problems. He had to move the Morrigan away from the lab as quickly as possible since it was either going to be blown up by his people or the ervas. The other problem, among many, was how to get his people off the lab before it blew! They had two shuttles and both were initially used to send the scientist and soldiers to the lab to recover the information that were seeking and the retrieve any people that were stationed on the lab. While those two shuttles were occupied, his Marines had to wait for their pickup, but time was running out. There didn't seem to be a very good solution to any of these problems. Was this going to be the end of the Morrigan? Oh, yeah, remember the War Dog, Mac, on the Morrigan? His kind have a tendency to go berserk sometimes!
Meanwhile, Rita Peck and Lisa Erris, were tracking down a scientist named Carl Petrova. Well, they found him and they also found Colonel Jerson Whitaker, the rogue Confed soldier planning to take over the Confederation. Actually, Col Whitaker found them and now they are his captives! They already know too much about Col Whitaker's plans so they figure they're never going to let them go so someone is going to have to rescue them. Good guess as to whom that could be since everyone else is very, very busy!
At least Major Oliver Peck and Dr. Meredith Lyson were rescued from the slightly disturbed hidden pirates on the planet where he and she got stranded. In that rescue, not everyone got out. A part of Rita's old gang caught barricaded in a cave and now need to rescue themselves. The ervas have landed a shuttle on the planet which might just come in handy if they can kill all the ervas and take the shuttle out of there.
So, once again, a lot going on in what seemed to be a short book. I guess it really wasn't, but the writing reads so smoothly that you don't realize how much you've covered until you're at the end of the book. That's a good kind of book to read in a series that doesn't seem to have an end.
I already have book 8, "Shifting Power" and 9, "Desparate Times" so I've got lots more reading to do.
This series is a tad less than his others. A bit more formulaic. Same multiple plot lines, same descriptions of bullets and blasts to the face, etc. Noah deserves to be dead many times over. Everyone was right about Mac, he is responsible for deaths of many and by extension so is Markel. Noah always seems to lead with his chin, and if Whitaker is half as wily as he is portrayed, This whole saga could be over by the middle of the next book. Who will save his silly butt next time? I’m guessing Rita and Erris, the gullibly recruited new stars for Whitaker.
This is a really good one and critical in the sequence with major plot moves. The pace a really quick with almost he first half of the book covering the ships fight for survival after the ambush at the end of the previous . The story grabs you from the first page and doesn't let you go until the end which leads into the next book in the series. book. The characters continue to develop at a good rate and plot maintains its high standard. I Highly recommend this series.
Author keeps us engaged. The overall team can be split easily.... each could have become its own book, but keeping the lines in parallel really works. Next book please..... Tick tick tick
John Walker is one of my favorite military science fiction authors and this series has not disappointed me. The twist and turns of the story keep me always looking to get to the next chapter - the next book.
This book, as with all previous in the series, are enjoyable and hole my attention to the very end. What has been a distraction in all of them is that they read like a bad translation. (Asian to English is my impression) So many errors in grammar, spelling and context that I gave up sedning in corrections. Please , please correct this!
Having read a lot of John's work, I am amazed at his creativity. More great characters, a great story with new planets and new tech. This series is as good as any and this book keeps the nonstop action going
This story kept me on the edge of my seat. It was super good until the end of the book, which was depressing. The bad guys seem omnipotent. And the good guys can’t seem to catch a break. Still it is a good story, and not the end of the series.
This story line was thoroughly not what I expected after the first six books, it left me wondering if it was worth the effort to finish it. I hope the next installment is going to be better.
What can I say only it was a brilliant book, the guy is chip off the old block and I cannot wait to find out his dads reaction to him borrowing his ship. This is going to be a really good series
