'Screening the Novel' is intended for a general as well as an academic readership. The book takes as its theme the relationship between literature and the contemporary means of production and distribution ('the media') -in particular, film and television. The intention of the book is to explore and evaluate the mutual opportunities and restrictions in this relationship. The book concludes with an extensive account of the making of a television classic serial, the BBC's highly acclaimed version of Thackeray's 'Vanity Fair', outlining the procedures and roles of various members of the production team. Extensive interview material with those involved both technically and artistically shows the development of the program from commissioning of the script through to transmission.

Robert Giddings (1936), professor emeritus at Bournemouth University, who has died aged 76, lived, taught, wrote and argued from a wheelchair, having been disabled by polio as a child. He produced 20 books, alone or in collaboration, and reviewed widely, for publications including the Listener, Observer, New Statesman and Tribune. Source
