Well, it's been a year but I'm finally back for this. Those who follow me know of Fright Vision and you'll recall I read the first Cursed Coin last year after having gotten both it and the sequel. Read my review for info but basically it was pretty good, and left on a cliffhanger that made me wanna read more.
Now it's here and it's a step down, but still pretty good. There isn't a lot to say, since I went into a lot of it last time. We start 3 months after the events of the first and RJ is trying to get past all the horror of last time. But of course, when he thinks he's out, they pull him back in. He and Shelly have to further figure out what is really going on, especially now they there are hints their dead dad may not be so dead after all.
This is a pretty well paced and fun story. It's 153 pages but doesn't feel it drags that much. I wouldn't say it has tons of actions, but it goes at a good clip and pushes the mysteries forward well. I wen through it pretty quickly which is good for me. We some of the mild body horror again and we do push the idea of the temptation of the evil coin more this time.
We get some answers regarding what is going on in the larger universe, sort of. We get some info but there's no direction references to the other books which is a bit weak. It also opens more questions about all this, and doesn't explain everything as there's a third one.
It has less of a cliffhanger this time but is clearly opening things for me. Things get pushed forward nicely but I feel like it could done more. Some of the deeper/more complicated elements of the first are toned down here, so it feels more simple.
That's why it's weaker than the first book, it has less going on and was just a bit less interesting on a story level even if it was still engaging and fun. RJ's bond with Shelly is still there but she doesn't do much this time which is a shame. We get closure with this Wally guy and the thing with dad gets handled nicely.
Although given what happens in the end, I wish we had more time to explore it,. Also, Mom actually gets somewhat involved which is cool. While it's not a rehash, I don't think it quite adds enough to make it totally fresh in some areas. There's a bit repeating the same feel and some back and forth. It does enough new in some places but could have done more.
That's the thing, it does enough to be a fun sequel but it doesn't take everything far enough. It feels like a middle chapter, meaning it works in being a bridge but that's about it. It's still pretty good, but I am less likely to re-read it compared to the first one. There's enough of a gap that makes me wish more was done but ah well.
The third one came out recently but since these are not on kindle unlimited anymore for some reason, I don't know when I can get to it. Hopefully someday we'll see Fright Vision Endgame.
For now, it's another good, just don't expect a ton out of it. Not a deep review but ah well. Anyway, so hopefully next read is Slappy Beware. After that, we'll see. October is coming we'll be getting into Halloween reviews soon, yay.
This is a sequel to Cursed Coin...so you'll want to read it first. This book helps fill in some of the questions about Frightvision in Cursed Coin. But there will always be a few more questions.... As an adult, I love this series. It is for kids, no doubt. This book is a little scary but none of the books I've read would be too scary for young readers, in my opinion. My daughter reads them as bedtime stories. If you are looking for cliff hangers, you'll want to check out these books.
Review from my little sister, Laly (11): In the first installment, RJ was a scaredy cat, unlike his sister Shelly, who loved creepy things. One day, she found an evil coin that brought trouble to their doorstep. Now, they must escape a frightening man and throw the coin to the bottom of the nearby lake, the same lake that took their father one day.
*SPOILER ALERT* I don't want to give away too much of the story, but RJ has nightmares about the coin after their previous adventure. One day, RJ and Shelly were using Frightvision goggles to search for clues to locate RJ's father. While using the goggles, they witnessed an old children's hospital that had burned down. Will RJ resort to using the dark powers of the coin to unravel the secrets of Frightvision? Are you in the mood for a thrilling and exciting book series to keep you on the edge? If so, you should check out The Cursed Coin series, part of the FrightVision series.
You won't be able to put these books down once you start reading them. The first book is my favorite, as it has the perfect balance of spine-tingling scares and humor, thanks to RJ's character. The second and third books are just as excellent, and they kept me engaged and entertained until the very last page.
The series has unexpected twists and turns that keep you guessing until the end. The story is unique and well-crafted, unlike any other book series I've read.
One of the things I loved most about this series was the distinct personalities of each character. The character development is fantastic, and each has a unique voice and personality that makes them stand out.
I highly recommend The Cursed Coin series to anyone who loves a good mystery with a mix of action and sci-fi. It's a quick, fun, and spooky read that will leave you wanting more. So grab a copy, and get ready for a thrilling ride!

Okay, so the first one in the series was deserving of five stars mostly because I liked how Crantz wrote RJ's anxiety, and how high the stakes got (literally, the world could've ended because of the coin). This one, I say is deserving of five stars. The stakes were more RJ, his sister and dad could've been killed in the debris of a collapsing laboratory, which is arguably not as high, but considering all RJ wanted was to see his dad again, I'd argue it was just as bad for him as the world ending. I also consider the concept of being turned into a monster (especially an evil one) to be one of the scariest ideas you can put in a horror story, and I also like how he ended up using it to his advantage.
I will say, it is a bit depressing Wally's gone, likely for good, now. He'd helped them out as much as he did, but seeing as it was what he wanted, I guess I can say it was a good thing.
However, what I gotta give this praise for the most is the fact that RJ, Shelly and their mom are reunited with their dad again. We still don't exactly have answers for why he disappeared, but I'd say it's a satisfying way to bring him back. Plus, who knows? It might be answered in The Cursed Coin 3? Either way, I'm sure that book will be great when I get to it. Great read!
