This book is a must-have for the paleontology geek in your family! I definitely learned new information from reading this book, despite being rather well read on the topic of dinosaurs ;) I This is not only about dinosaurs however! I loved the practical advice for children on how to search for fossils themselves, the thorough guide to various dinosaurs and their fossils, information on how fossils are formed, and most importantly for this read-aloud mama - pronunciation guides right in the text! So often I stumble through some of the words related to this topic and I love being able to confidently read this one aloud. This book has side bars that moves you away from the main text, but not many. Often children's nonfiction has you moving all over the page which maybe they think keeps the child's interest but is a struggle for the reader, so I like that about this book too. Very fun and we will definitely be buying the physical copy for our collection.

I was provided a digital ARC copy of this book for my honest review.

Fossils for Kids: A Junior Scientist's Guide to Dinosaur Bones, Ancient Animals, and Prehistoric Life on Earth by Ashley Hall is filled with photographs and facts for junior fossil hunters ages 5 to 9. It includes how fossils form, where they are found, and tips on how to identify them. Start by learning more about some of your favorite dinosaurs—from Velociraptor to Tyrannosaurus rex—and where you can see the coolest dinosaur skeletons. Then discover the creatures that predate even the dinosaurs! You’ll meet famous birds, like the Archaeopteryx, explore tiny invertebrate trilobites, and learn which ancient plant is the source of a delicious drink—root beer! Readers won’t just be learning about dinosaurs; this book covers mammals, other reptiles, and plant fossils.

Fossils for Kids is a solid and well organized book that gives a summary of fossil study and finding for young readers. The information is accessible and covers a broad range of information that is valuable to readers just getting started on the topic. The pictures, illustrations, and occasional fact box and sidebar were well placed and added value while keeping the book from becoming too text heavy. I though the book as a whole is a great starting point for readers that are intrigued by fossil hunting, and want to know more about the process both so they can get started and so they can know what the professionals are doing in the field. However, I think that readers that have been interested in the subject for awhile and maybe already read other books on the topic might find it less valuable than those just getting started.

Fossils for Kids is a good introduction to fossils and related fields for young readers.

This review was posted for the purchase of a boxed set of: Gems For Kids, Geology For Kids, and Fossils For Kids, all from the Junior Scientist series from Rockridge Press. (My Amazon review includes photographs from the books.)

The three books in this set cover distinct categories in earth science and are laid out in a format that includes large font, frequent photographs, non-fiction reading tools such as maps, charts, graphs, glossary, index, further resources, and table of contents. The Geology for Kids book cover far more than one would expect with the very broad “Earth beneath your feet” descriptor and includes landforms and extreme weather that affects those landforms. Each chapter in this book includes an experiment that demonstrates a facet of what was just learned. Most can be done with items found readily at home and require varying amounts of adult help from none to a great deal. The later chapters guide young rock hounds in collecting, studying and classifying their own rocks. The Gems book includes charts and maps and pictures of gems that is fun to browse through. Fossils is similar in layout to the Geology book but doesn’t have quite as many hands on activities. The dinosaur section will appeal to even those preschool-aged children who can already correctly identify their dinosaur toys.

Aspects of all three of these books can be used by caregivers with their preschool children who love non-fiction or as a way to interest them in something more than Paw Patrol! The photographs and activities have broad age appeal. Students who are in grades 3-6 will be able to use these books independently and I recommend that science classrooms and libraries serving these ages get these and other “Junior Scientist” books available.

We are having so much fun studying prehistory. This book was a part of our curriculum and it was fine but many of the other books have been far better. It is very informative, just not that much fun.

This was a phenomenal book that shows fossils for kids. It is especially good for elementary age kids who are getting super into fossils. I wish I would have had it when I was young.

I enjoyed learning more about fossils, because even though we are taught some facts in school, this book takes you on a wonderful journey of the story told by each fossil found.

Children and adults who are passionate about nature will definitely love it!
