I So Wanted to Like This Cookbook…
An unreserved Harry Potter fan, I so wanted to like this cookbook. On the surface, there are some likable elements. A quick flip through the book will reveal that each recipe has a picture, and many of them are very cute, starting with the Wizard Hat Cupcakes and continuing with Owl Cupcakes, among many others. But on closer inspection, the recipes themselves seem to be problematic. The recipes mix imperial (US) and metric measure, which I think is confusing. It's perfectly okay if every recipe has both, but it wasn't like that in this book. Some recipes were written strictly in imperial, some in metric, and some a mixture of both. Sometimes the oven temperatures were only given in UK measures, including gas marks and Celsius while others were given only in Fahrenheit. I adore cookbooks, but I'm a stickler for consistency. Some ingredients were actually confusing at times, and sometimes packages didn't have sizes. There was no consistency in the look of the ingredient lines—capitalization, prepping, spacing, etc. The directions often seemed incomplete or were at least confusing. If a dedicated young baker attempted some baking ones, I think he or she would get frustrated, or the recipe itself would fail. (By the way, not every recipe is child friendly. There are some very adult drinks in the book.) Some simpler ideas could be done with only a little direction and glance at the photo, like the Cheesy Magic Broomsticks. There are enough errors, omissions, and confusing parts that I do not feel like I can recommend this book. If you want to pick it up as a novelty item for a rabid Harry Potter fan, that might be the best use it could serve.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

If you are a Harry Potter fan and wanted to host the perfect Harry Potter themed party, these recipes will do the trick.
All the recipes include photos and but are not always easy to follow. I made several and they all turned out okay.
My first complaint, some recipes are clearly written in the American - English style while others are not. Ingredients are also a mixed bag of American and United Kingdom. Second complaint, the author must not be a baker or has not tried these recipes herself. The spice cake had good flavor but was so dense. Too much wet ingredients vs dry. I plan to remake but adding 1/2 cup flour, cutting down on the sugar by 1/4 cup and removing 1 egg to see if the balance is better. The butterbeer fudge is very soft. I may try some of the other recipes by subbing hard to find ingredients.
We loved the Hogwarts Acceptance Letters (ham and cheese sandwhiches), Weasleys Dragon Roasted Nuts and Golden Snitch Truffles.

The beginning of this starts out with a few basic recipes that I’ve seen before. Soon after it becomes much more inventive and unique. I’m looking forward to trying some of these out.
