After accidentally coming across a mysterious love letter addressed to her bookstore-owning mother, high school senior Lucy Sinclair must confront her uncertainty over the stability of her parents' marriage and her family's bonds, while also deciding whether at last to make her feelings known to her longtime crush, classmate Mark Kelly, before it's too late and he takes up with another girl or...they both go off to college.

Mark is facing challenges of his own: aside from his responsibilities as a student-athlete, he is called on to offer strong emotional support to his older sister during a difficult time--which includes a visit to a colorful psychic--and he is also confronted by the sudden reappearance of an ex-girlfriend who has been away at college for the last year and a half. With her kamikaze-like return to his life, Mark is forced to examine his conflicting feelings for her and his growing attachment to Lucy.

High school senior Lucy Sinclair has had a crush on classmate Mark Kelly since she first laid eyes on him in the eighth grade. Mark, a star soccer player, has just started to really notice Lucy. Claire Greene’s charming YA debut, Fast Forward Rewind Pause, tells the will-they-or-won’t-they story arc of these two likable characters from their alternating voices. As much as they seem to be meant for one another, the clock is ticking on their high school careers. With all the angst and sweetness of a John Hughes movie, Greene takes the reader on a joyful roller-coaster ride of life obstacles and teenage uncertainties in this budding romance tale that will leave you smiling long after you close the book.

I really liked this YA novel (I don't read them often, but two authors whose YA novels I admired a lot are Alison Umminger's and Michelle Falkoff's) that takes on family dynamics, high school senior-hood, first love, Lucy's (one of the two main characters) mother's friendship with a secret admirer (whose identity is of course eventually revealed).

There's also quite a bit of discussion about books, e.g. in scenes in a high school AP English class and in a bookstore owned by Lucy's mother, where Lucy works part-time - these were much fun (especially the discussion about novels written by men with main characters who are adulterous wives - i.e. Anna Karenina and Madame Bovary). The Awakening is also on the class reading list.
