This book was published in 1980. It is as much about a period of time in China as it is about Rewi Alley but the two belong together. I found this book really interesting but difficult to read at times as the style of writing jumped about the different years. So I would give 3 1/2 stars really if I could. It has quite a few photos included which is good. Rewi achieved some incredible things in his life time and obviously had a real empathy with the village peasants but this book didn't really let you get to know him very well. Perhaps the energy he had for everything he did just didn't allow you to keep up with him. It seems he took numerous photos and wrote a massive amount. A book of photos with his poetry would be interesting. I will have to watch out for more books about Rewi Alley. I think a reader would have to be interested in Rewi and this turbulent period of time in China to find this book worth reading.
