Hardwick creates a first-rate blend of magic and grit in this second outing in The Circle series as her young protagonist faces a malevolent pair of enemies after the deaths of her mother and mentor while struggling with self-doubts and insecurities.

Soraya Rawlings is no longer an apprentice now: the brutal murders of four Elders have forced her to come out of the shadows and take charge of the Circle. Using her newly-found ability of Dream Walking, Soraya sets on to train the new Circle members in an urgent effort to thwart the plans of their enemies: the pair of Madeline Renaud, the witch and leader of White Oak Coven and Shawn Kites, Owner and CEO of DNAgen Biolabs. The stakes rise as Shawn realizes he could use his newly-found magical abilities to destroy the Circle. Soraya must find a way to thwart her enemies’ vicious plan or risk losing everyone in the Circle.

Readers who haven’t read the first book will struggle to keep track of the shop owners and apprentices initially, but once they get the hang of the story, the developing complexities will keep them invested. There are multiple mini storylines and characters’ backstories that take the reader into American history’s grim past. Hardwick skillfully keeps various threads of the plot together, and as various sub plots converge, the different backstories merge to form a highly satisfying and unified whole. Many characters use broken English to converse which not only makes it difficult for the reader to follow the story but also hampers the flow of the narrative.

The pacing of the book is smooth, and the multiple points of view and numerous plot twists unravel at a leisurely pace. The novel’s real power lies in Hardwick’s perceptive and sensitive portrayal of her characters: Soraya’s struggles with her fears, self-doubts, and identity issues are sketched with credibility and understanding, making her a heroine the reader will love to root for. The Elders in the story are complete darlings. Shawn with his sadism and disturbing tendency of self-righteousness makes for an intimidating villain.

The very idea of the drug, Melacrit, and the reasons behind inventing it is what makes this as much a story of magic as it’s a moving exploration of the issues of prejudice and racial discrimination.

Readers will relish Hardwick’s whimsical take on racism.

The Conductor is the Book Two of the Circle series written by the author Brenda Hardwick. The story starts sadly with Soraya back from the funeral of her mother Constance Rawlings and her mentor Iona. Inspite of her grief, she felt responsible towards the Circle and after all she is not the only one who is suffering. Four of The Circle’s shop owners had died: Zacharias in Chicago’s Hearth Shop; Willamae in DC’s Love Shop; Walterine in LA’s Peace Shop; and Iona in the Home Shop.

Soraya found a black and white photo having 12 young people and she thought they must be the 12 shop owners including Iona. While Soraya was picking the photo, she heard the voice of Iona but she couldn't see her. Now with elders and her own mentor Iona gone, Soraya felt like she doesn't have to do all this alone. She now have to figure out why the elders were murdered and how she can protect the others.

After the murder of four shop owners, Shawn Kites, owner and CEO of DNAgen Biolabs is ready to pick the next shop owner in St. Louis. These shop owners are a threat to Shawn's plan of marketing Melacrit (DNAgen's new drug) to White Supremist target consumerism. Will Shawn be successful in removing the next shop owner from his way or will Soraya be successful in protecting the Circle. Grab a copy of this book and unveil the suspense yourself.

As compared to the first part, this book is much longer. The story is fast paced so I wasn't bored at any moment. The cover page of the book is nice and related to the story. The story is intense and I couldn't put this book down. I am looking forward to read Freedom Rings ( Book 3 of the Circle) that is yet to be released.

𝑴𝒚 𝑹𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘:
The Conductor is the second installment in The Circle series. Main character of the story is Soraya Rawlings whose world turned from great to worse very soon. She lost her mother Constance Rawlings and her mentor Iona Mabutu. She attended two funerals in a day and that's too much for anyone. The brutal murder of the four of The Circle's Elder shop owners made Soraya felt that she is not the only one who is suffering from loss.

Using her dream walking, Soraya has to save life of other shop owners who are part of The Circle. She has to stop Shawn Kites, Owner and CEO of DNAgen Biolabs from murdering the remaining members of The Circle. Since the story continues from the first installment so I advise to read this book after reading the first one in the series.

At some places, author has used broken English to change the narrative. Most of the words were clear but some words were confusing. Cover of the book is well designed and the story will keep you on the edge of your seat. It's a captivating story that readers couldn't put aside once they start reading it.

🔷 BOOK: The Conductor
🔷 AUTHOR: Brenda Hardwick

My Review:
Book Two of the Circle i.e. The Conductor takes readers on the adventure with Soraya Rawlings. Soraya who has recently lost her mother and her mentor has a huge responsibility in front of her. She has to protect the shop owners who are part of The Circle.

Shawn has a plan for marketing the Melacrit to White Supremist target consumers. Melacrit, DNAgen’s new drug, could theoretically eradicate color in the human population. Even though Ray don't always agree with his boss Shawn's plan but still he has to do what he is asked to do. Ray couldn't believe that Shawn could order a hit just after his mother's funeral.

Madeline Renaud, High Priestess of White Oak Coven and Shawn’s teacher educate Shawn about magic. Hardwick has done great job in writing the characters that are so interesting. Soraya's character is amazing. Pace of the book is well managed. The uniqueness of the storyline made this one a gripping story for me. Go ahead with it buddies, it's worth reading.

The brutal murder of the four Elder Shop Owners including Soraya's mentor Iona forced Soraya to take charge of The Circle. She has to use Dream Walking i.e. her gift so she can warn other shop owners and save their lives from their enemy Shawn Kites and Madeline Renaud, the witch and leader of White Oak Coven.

With the invention of new drug, Melacrit authors discusses the racial discrimination in the story as this drug could theoretically eradicate color in the human population. Will Soraya Rawlings could protect the shop owners from their enemies?

Written in a lucid language and multiple narratives, the story keeps readers on the edge. Various twists in the story hooks reader's attention. I started reading this book on Friday night and I finished it over weekend. Writing style of Hardwick is nice. The plot of her stories are different from usual stories and therefore I have become a fan of her writing. I am very much interested in reading the third book in the series.

My Review:
After losing her lovely mother and her mentor Iona, Soraya Rawlings is sad and in grief but she couldn't just sit to mourn over the loss of a loved ones. She has a purpose to fulfill.

Four Shop Owners are no longer alive. They have been brutally murdered and the other shop owner's life is in danger too. Soraya has to overcome the obstacles and save the other shop owners from Mr Kites, their murderer.

Shawn Kites is working on a new drug and Madeline Renaud is his mentor. Shawn and Soraya both has a mission now. Find out by reading this novel who will get closer to their mission.

Author must have put great thought in constructing this amazing plot. Narrative is interesting. Magic and the new drug drives the story. Dialogues are written nicely. Language of the book is easy to understand and characters are well written. Overall, it's a great story that I like to recommend to other readers.
