Mitsumasa Anno (born March 20, 1926) was a Japanese illustrator and writer of children's books, known best for picture books with few or no words. He received the international Hans Christian Andersen Medal in 1984 for his "lasting contribution to children's literature".
Great stories about being thankful for what you have in life! I must confess that it is a little difficult to read the 2nd story along the bottom of the page with no pictures to go with it, but other than that, it's a great read!
This book pulls the opposite of a common picturebook trick: it has one set of illustrations, but it has two stories that go with them. The first is a diegetic rendering of two of the Grimms' tales while the second is what an illiterate fox makes of the pictures when "reading" the book to his son.
Clever and entertaining.
I still haven't read any of Anno's work in Japanese. It would be interesting to compare the two.
this book is REALLY good. It's ideal for read alouds, but also sorta satirizes read alouds and is also good for starting a conversation and also is just plain fun
