In the fantasy western world of Westhold, First-year Alathanian Marshal Jeremiah Blade sets out across the badlands of the Shattered Hills to the dusty frontier town of Dryftwood. Marshal Blade is coming to this lonely outpost of civilization to round up arcane criminals flouting Alathane's magical Duskstone regulations. The marshal has his work cut out for him--Dryftwood is a rough place filled with dangerous outlaws, ornery mayors, and raging dust storms. Jeremiah will soon realize that it is going to take a lot more than words to bring to heel a land that has no intention of being tamed.
A magnificently woven tale of a western-style fantasy. Jeremiah is a hot off the presses newly graduated man of the law who has volunteered to go to one of the roughest known parts of the world to keep the magic use in check. He discovers once he gets there and tries to enter the city as a major enforcer, not every corner of the world values the written laws as much as where he’s from. The diversity of the cast of the book was wonderful, the way the different types of characters are woven together into the web that makes up the different communities as they exist and function in different places in the world kept me so interested and pondering the societal framework and how it relates to our current world events. Jeremiah learns through his interactions with different characters through his journey that by the book isn’t always best, and he widens his perspective greatly by the end. As a book quite outside of my comfort zone, this book had me engrossed pretty much from the start. I finished it in two days in spite of normal mom-life responsibilities. I look forward to reading book 2 very soon. Highly recommend!
The book and premise may seem puzzling but the combination of western and fantasy is wonderfully done. The traditional fantasy races are given a fresh perspective and are different from anything else that I've read. There is a suggestion of a very deep lore in this world that does not sacrifice the story. This sets us up for additional books to delve deeper into the myriad aspects of this world. Looking forward to more!
It had a slow start, but once it picked up, I couldn’t put it down! I can’t wait for the next one to come out. Almost disappointed it’s only a trilogy... I might need more than 3 books.
It’s a fantasy western sort of novel with a lot of action. I felt the characters were very realistic and the growth/development of them was entertaining.
