When Arabella arrives in South Africa for a short holiday in September 1899, she has no idea that the Boer War is about to explode. Trapped in Natal with her unstable cousin Rosamunde and the latter's predatory husband Ben, Arabella decides to flee - but not before she has encountered the enemy in the shape of Deneys du Rand, a rugged Boer soldier... and the most attractive man she has ever seen. Arabella becomes torn between two fires - between two men, both beloved, and both forbidden.
3.5 stars. It could have been a full 4 star rating but I didn't much enjoyed the way historical/political/cultural elements were told: when people spoke about it it seemed as the author was copying and past a paragraph of wikipedia or similar and that pulled me away from the story every time. I understand the need of writing historical elements but the way it was done felt forced the majority of times. Anyway I still greatly enjoyed it, Arabella was a really cool heroine and I ended up rooting for her very much. Also all the other characters were well fleshed out and the world building was great. It was an epic journey. A bit it remembered me the movie Gone with the Wind... of course the two stories are quite different, but there were some similarities: a strong heroine (even if the two personalities are quite different), torn between the love of two men, a war going on which changes the lives of all characters and make the heroine grow up and strengthen...
