渡辺茂男は、戦後1950年代後半から2000年初頭にかけ、欧米の優れた児童文学や絵本の翻訳と紹介、平行して童話や絵本の創作を精力的におこなった。翻訳と創作を合計すると、生涯に300冊もの子どもの本を出版した。
