Stuart Jaffe is the madman behind the Nathan K thrillers, Max Porter paranormal-mystery series, The Malja Chronicles, The Bluesman series, and much more. He has written numerous short stories in Fantasy, SF, and Horror. He was also the co-host of The Eclectic Review (http://eclectic.libsyn.com) -- a podcast about science, art, and well, everything.

Stuart lives in rural North Carolina, and for those who keep count, the latest animal listing is as follows: one dog, two cats, one albino corn snake, three aquatic turtles, assorted fish, seven chickens, and a horse. Thankfully, the chickens and the horse do not live inside the house.

Kobo epub - page count estimate (p/b number)

Book 1 Immortal Killers (August 16 - 17)
Book 2 Killing Machine (August 17 - 18)
Book 3 The Cardinal (August 18 - 20)

Nathan Flynn discovers - the hard way - that there is a race of Immortals coexisting with humans, when he is killed in a New York deli. He finds himself in a void, facing what he perceives as a Darkness... He fights to escape and wakens in a different body. It seems that the Immortals are able to absorb a second soul and it is this that allows them to recover from otherwise fatal injuries. He is recruited by a group - coerced, rather - who train him to survive. Turning his back on the group he determines that he will be a force for good, helping those unable - being mortal - to help themselves. Fleeing two opposing groups of Immortals he comes into conflict with The Cardinal - a 'superior' Prime Immortal able to absorb more than one extra soul and therefore even more difficult to best...

These first three episodes in the sequence provide a coherent introduction to this storyline. While there are supernatural elements the plot seems less involving than the Max Porter books by the same author. Nevertheless the premise is intriguing enough to follow - a second Collection is available and on my wants list.

This is a collection of the first 3 books in the series, I've finished the first. If I read more I'll update this.

Immortal Killers (Nathan K #1)
Maybe 2.5 stars, no more. It's a fairly entertaining, quick read, but hardly "pulse pounding" as the blurb gushingly describes it. Pretty fast paced with lots of action but rather unrealistic. The writing is sophomoric at best, verging on high school level with no depth or subtlety and little character development. Basically it's the everyman from an ordinary life thrust into high stakes action and adventure story, hardly original. The basic plot device is quite interesting and leads to more interesting side effects, but other than that it doesn't have much going for it. It did keep me going to the end so some points for that, but not sure I'l bother with any more in the series. Life's too short and there are too many other better books!

I have liked Jaffe's stories about witchcraft in Greensboro, NC. Nathan K is far different, about bodies that can hold two souls at once, and if one is killed, the other can rejuvenate the body and survive. But another soul must be obtained quickly to assure continued immortality.

It. Results in a lot of mayhem and strange, disconcerting plots. Jaffe, says it is an opportunity to explore new scenarios. I will pass on the rest.

Intriguing stories in a paranormal world. Great world building and complex characters. Action, suspense, intrigue and an underlying moral dilemma. This collection is a great way to start a series that is still going strong at 9 books, so far.

I have read Jaffe’s Max Porter series and enjoyed every page. The Nathan K series hasn’t disappointed, a high octane page turner with immortals and a young man thrust into its world and still trying to keep his humanity.
