Though this is a niche topic, it’s excellent if it fits the niche you’re looking for- the history of preaching up to the late 19th century. Broadus offers many insights and encouragements for preachers along the way, and even though he wrote 150 years ago, his insights are incredibly relevant to preachers today.

He is extremely charitable to those outside his theological tradition and exhibits a breadth of knowledge about the topic.

It is a bit funny (looking back from our time) that Charles Spurgeon only gets one paragraph, albeit a generous one. However he was a contemporary of the author and obviously more time needed to pass to prove his lasting influence as a preacher.

This excellent little classic provides a sweeping overview of preaching in a series of chapters which had been lectures. It assumes some familiarity w church history, which this topic is a subset of, but it is not onerous. The book is so short it whet my appetite to find the original source material of the people he was referring to. Fortunately you can find anything on the internet these days so I found myself reading a translation of a 17th C French Catholic preacher and really appreciated it! I think this book has helped broaden my understanding of what it means to communicate Gods Word.
