Chicks Laying Nest Eggs : How 10 Skirts Beat the Pants Off Wall Street...And How You Can Too!

Rate this book
When Karin Housley asked the financial expert who was handling the family investments to explain his strategy to her, he said, "You just wouldn't understand." Grrrr, she thought, and with that an investor was born. But Karin didn't want to head into the stock market's uncharted fiscal wilderness alone. She called ten friends — ten women ranging in age from twenty-nine to sixty scattered across the United States, all concerned about their financial futures — and urged them to start an investment club with her.

They called themselves the Chicks Laying Nest Eggs Investment Club, held their meetings in an online chat room, and used the Internet to research, buy, and sell their stock choices. After two years in action, the Chicks are beating the pants off Wall Street's wise men. Their Girls just wanna have fun, but Chicks want to learn something — and make a few bucks — along the way. Chicks Laying Nest Eggs is all about doing it all! And they've been spreading the gospel on their investment club website — www.chickslayingnesteggs.com — showing Chicks everywhere how and why to invest.

Okay, okay. The Chicks know what you're "Yeah, right. An investment book that I can understand. Like that can happen." Never fear! The Chicks didn't know a stock from a stocking when they started their club, but that didn't stop them from learning (fast) or beating the market (big!) right out of the coop. And they didn't know a thing about computers, either. Here in Chicks Laying Nest Eggs , founding Chick Karin Housley starts right at the beginning and recaps everything the Chicks learned on the way to becoming Dow Jones divas.

* What this thing called the market is and how it works;

* How to start your own investment club, buy stock in some good companies, and build your own Chick-worthy returns;

* All the essentials (and none of the double-talk) about the S&P, NASDAQ, market cap, mutual funds, bears, bulls, and all that other stuff that you always thought you'd never understand;

* How to get a computer and get your club online so you can meet anytime, from anywhere — without crashing your too-busy schedule, or even getting out of your pajamas;

* And, most of all, how to have a blast while getting your money to work harder for you than it ever has before.

Chicks Laying Nest Eggs is the simplest step-by-step guide to investing in the stock market ever put together. It is for every woman, because the time has passed (if it ever really existed) when any woman could afford to be ignorant about her finances.

May have had a higher rating if I had read it when it was fresh, but it is clearly dated with references to how to set up your internet, so... I could not find their website so seeing how they've done long-term is not an option.

Still, about 50% was focused on 101-level of investing and I appreciate that. The author does not assume you know anything about investing so uses common language to teach what she learned. These were the parts I liked most - very similar to a "Dummies" book but with the kind of analogies that a friend would use to explain trickier concepts.

The other half is a combination of setting up your own investment group, the ins and outs and legalese and IRS implications, along with general chattiness. This half didn't do anything for me at all. The book is not divided along these lines, however, you have to go chapter by chapter to know if it is the more helpful investing info vs club/new-to-internet info.

I can see why some folks were put off by the chattiness, but I just skipped the end of chapter snippets from their emails and focused on the bits that interested me. And the chapters are laid out this way. You can tell from the first paragraph which type of chapter you're getting into to decide for yourself whether to read or skim.

If you've never invested or are trying to figure out a good way to determine one investment over another, this book can help. Chapter 10 summarizes different (famous) investment strategies. There are calculations as well, including where to get the numbers for each calculation. Chapter 11 shows how the Chicks mixed and matched these strategies to create their own guide. Plus, every chapter has a summary at the end that are just bullets, so you can read the bullets and decide whether to read the whole chapter (thus skipping the how to set up email type chapters).

The literary quality is quite poor but the information is stellar. The author's advice on how to get started in the stock market is simple, direct, and easy to follow. It is inspirational in regards to having extremely easy control over your money and making your money work for you. SIMPLE. EASY. EMPOWERING. Just a warning that the author tells jokes every other sentence, some you'll laugh with, some you'll laugh at, and some you'll want to throttle her for. So, enjoy dodging her jokes and values to get the aweomse info on increasing cash flow your way in order to spread your amazing light-filled values in the world that much more easily!!!! In addition, her book is about SAFE investing, I recommend author Robert Kiyosaki for information on riskier investments where you'll get a much larger return on your investment (make a shitload more money on minimal investment).

The writing is poor. The rambling on is annoying. This was written during a time when you could almost randomly choose a stock and have temporary success. There is still value in the book though. It demonstrates the effectiveness potential of an investment club. Investment clubs are a wonderful thing, and they aren't that difficult to run. The hard part is finding worthwhile members. The book does give some insights (at least theoretically) into finding success in the stock market. It isn't required reading for a club or its members. Think of it as reading a fantasy novel before attending a renaissance fair.

If you don't mind the jokes and chick chat, the information is really great. If you have no understanding of the stock market, this is a great primer that ANYONE will be able to understand. I learned A TON I probably should have learned a long time ago.

I've learned a lot so far. She rambles, but she's easy to understand, and now I know things I probably should have already known but didn't.

Had to turn it back into the library but feel like it might be a book worth owning. Probably will pick it up the next time I'm at the bookstore!
