I was expecting this book to be about her business start ups and was unprepared for the dramatic personal story of her life before her success. Her perseverance and resilience is astounding. Marie never gave up on herself, her ambition, her hopes and dreams of what a nice family and stable life could be. The horrible conditions of her childhood defined her by honing the steel of her inner core but they didn’t become an excuse for not moving forward and reaching her goals. There are stories of women overcoming abuse, addition, homelessness but the simple directness in the way it was written makes it easy to read and very relatable. Should be a must read for teen girls.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It’s written more like a biographical essay rather than a story. Five stars for joiner’s perseverance and grit. She’s amazing and an inspiration. Rated the book three stars simply because it lacked details of recovery and summarized huge life events. Details and character development would have made this a five star book and possibly a motion picture!
