R A T I N G: 3.3 stars to Rui Chan's Rumples ★ ★ ★
Once I had gone past my hesitations, I was different and my infidelities became legion.’
Appropriately titled 'Rumpled' for the burgeoning impulse to smear any good attempt at self possession with the very disarmingly welcome one of passion, singularly and effectively, loosening the ties that bind. The satisfaction of unraveling the tight coils of rationality while anticipation is just as much a part of this dance. With the ambiguity of romantic affairs that are rife with the freedom of coming undone with that same impulse sometimes set to stymie as much as it might liberate.
Rui Chan writes short stories that mirror the brief, but long-memorised moments of sensation and craving. The short, decisive moments and sensations reflective of these brief narratives all combined by the language and dance of passion in different situations, between people and occurrence.
This fleeting collection contains a spread of assorted situations, all stories sharing the sweet sights of attraction and seduction, the irrational zeal, the bliss, the feeling, questions in the air, the hesitancy, the novelty of letting go that promises possession and cares only for letting go hinging on the instinctive desire to draw out the inhibitions that burrow under the appearance of indifference.
An adequately titled collection of very short fiction, Rui Chan gets in touch with the primal, instinctive, far-from-cerebral parts of us, both collective and commonplace, pooled in the homogeny of bonds conceived and shared from sensation and desire.
What exists between lovers is theirs alone, to mull over, to draw on, to drown in, separate and apart from the world aside. To indulge in the satisfying gift of rumpling feathers as well as clothes, 'a secret only the pillows can share.'
A big thank you to Rui Chan for sending me a copy of her work for review!
