Meet Daz Tait, a young South African with a taste for adventure and a love of the sea. In his early twenties he said he would sail the world’s oceans and his late father’s words were etched into his brain. “A man is only as good as his word,” he said, “if you make a promise to do something then make sure you get it done.”He knew that every man’s life began and ended the same way and that it was only the details in between that distinguishes the man from the mouse. He wanted to explore and discover new worlds and he had a plan, a plan that involved a joint venture with his best mate, working like crazy to save every penny to buy that dream boat, all so that they could sail away from the safety of modern living and embrace a life of risk and adventure. In this book, the first of a sensational trilogy, our intrepid hero sows the seeds of his dream by stepping off the hamster’s wheel, ending a relationship with a girl he truly loved and setting sail into the jaws of uncertainty. Little did he know that a mutiny and a shipwreck were just two small dramas that would test his resolve in sticking to his promise.
If, like me, you live the adventurous life at one remove, this is for you. It is not at all badly written though for me, the description of laddish lifestyle, drinking yourself stupid and dancing your head off, is an anathema, the author obviously had a blast. The descriptions of boat life and sailing are fine. It is a great read and I look forward to the next book.
