Power up your portal gun and set the dials for the golden age of science fiction as we step back in time and space to where the genre really took flight. Asimov, Clarke, Heinlein, Vonnegut, Dick, Herbert, and Bradbury: these are some of the names which inspired a generation, creating visions of space travel, alien civilisations, advanced technology, and future worlds which still resonate with us today. Their visionary legacy lives on in RAYGUN RETRO, a collection of stories by some of the best up and coming authors in the genre, expanding upon the styles and themes which laid the foundation of science fiction as we know it.
It was a bit hit and miss. There again, I often find sci-fi anthologies hit and miss, with some stories that are gold, others that are real bloopers. I have one of my own short stories in this one and I kind of wish it was surrounded by stories of better quality (and editing!). But to concentrate on the positives, the Forward is pretty good. Wait, did I just say that? I'm saying the Forward was good? Possibly the best part of the whole book? Well, almost. But as I say, there are a few good stories too. To pick out my top three: The Princess's Protector was a hell of a good story. The Savant was almost as good, while Mission: Free Queen Betsy and Jurassic Date are a cute third. As for the remaining 16, about half of them are worth reading.
