Phil Price was born in Sutton Coldfield in 1974. He lived in various places in the UK until his family settled in Rednal, a suburb on the outskirts of Birmingham in 1979. Growing up with an older brother and sister, he always flirted with reading, his home always littered with books. Then in 1997, Phil embarked on a travel expedition that took him from Greece to Thailand, via East and Southern Africa. Sitting in dusty bus stations in Kenya, Tanzania and Malawi with Wilbur Smith and James Herbert accompanying him, his imagination was sparked into life. Since those far-off days, he has never been without a book to read.

Phil started toying with the idea of writing a book in 2009. After writing a few short stories, he caught a whiff of an idea in his head. It started to evolve in 2010 until he had enough to begin his writing journey. Marriage and two children came along, with the story being moved to the back burner for periods of time. However, during those periods of writing inactivity, the story continued to manifest until it just needed one thing. To be written down.

The story was littered with places that had influenced Phil's life. From the Lickey Hills in Birmingham to the Amatola Mountains in South Africa, with other many other locations, in-between and far beyond.

The book was finished sometime in 2014, left on his computer until a chance conversation with an author friend made Phil take the bold step to publish his story, Unknown.

From there, Phil’s love for the first book spurred him on, creating The Forsaken Series. A vampire/paranormal/horror saga, set in our world, and others too. His love of horror and all things supernatural, inspired by authors such as King, Herbert and others, helped create the epic series.

After venturing into science fiction with his fourth title, Zoo, he turned to thrillers, with Ashes of Innocence being published in 2020 and His Dark Shadow expected early 2021 and The Retreat in 2023. Returning to his dark roots, Nobody's Son was released in 2025.

Aside from his writing, Phil lives on the edge of a small town in Worcestershire, UK. A wife and two sons keep Phil happily occupied as he steers his way through life, playing the husband, dad, and world creator in equal measure.

How Much Loss Can One Man Experience..Before He Goes Too Far

A thrilling book that hooks you in Immediately with a brutal kidnapping of a young girl, then the loss of her mother when she finds her!! Two young boys, smoking a joint and drinking vodka taken from their mom, believe the girl looks like an evil doll and remove her from a store. Perhaps they never thought it would go that far, but a father serving in Afghanistan has his heart ripped out and is on his way home.
Back in the UK, the soldier tries to keep his family together while he struggles to know what to do himself. As life goes on, every bit of happiness is torn from him, leaving only a part of the man he once was....
An outstanding story that you can NOT put down, with twists and turns that show how closely related people find themselves due to their actions. Whether good or bad....
5 STARS all the way with some fabulous writing by this author!!

This was an intense, gripping tale of murder and revenge. The plot is riveting, and the book almost impossible to put down. The characters are brought to life in this extraordinary suspenseful tale which draws on the readers’ emotions. Some of the scenes were chilling and made me cringe, but were masterfully done.

John, a good man, and a loving husband and father is engaged in a battle in Afghanistan. He gets a message to return to base where he learns soul-shattering news. His beloved wife has been brutally murdered by being burned to death and his five-year-old daughter is in intensive care. They were attacked by two young sons of an irresponsible mother. The boys had stolen vodka and drugs from the home while the mother, Mandy, was in bed with a stranger, Jerome. In their dazed, inebriated state they kidnapped John’s daughter, Lottie, from a crowd. When her mother arrived on the scene to rescue her, this inexplicable crime occurred.

John returns immediately to his most supportive and grieving family. He is trying his best to soothe his frightened daughter and restore her to a normal life without her mother. As the two young killers have been sent to prison there is little he can do in seeking retribution for the murder of his wife and the injuries to Lottie.

As several years pass, Lottie is being bullied in school. A burned doll meant to represent her mother is placed on her desk. Lottie finally fights back and the school becomes involved. John with Lottie is confronted by the bully’s angry mother who blames Lottie for the incidents at school. The girl’s brutal, large uncle, Dean, steps in and assaults John. John humiliates Dean with the superior fighting moves he learned in the military. This results in the family vowing revenge on John.

My only criticism of the book was for a few graphic sex scenes which I felt added nothing to the love stories. Also, we get how loving and helpful John’s mother-in-law, her new male friend, and his parents were throughout, but I felt this was somewhat overdone and a distraction.

Meanwhile, the mother of the boys who started the whole chain of events, has relocated, changed her name, and is living a reformed life. She is grieving for her two sons, finds their crimes most disturbing, but loves them as their mother. She knows the younger son has been killed in prison. The older boy is serving a long stretch in prison but she is unsure where he is located.

Mandy is finding love with a decent man who knows her unpleasant past but forgives her. Before she moved, Mandy stole a large sum of money from Jerome which he stashed in her house. Jerome, newly released from prison, is searching for her. He is bent on revenge for turning him in to the law and is determined to get his money back. He is accompanied by his half-brother, Dean.

As the years pass, John is still grieving the loss of his wife but is finding love again with the mother of Lottie’s best friend. This can't go well for John, whose life ends up in bitterness and turmoil once more. Lottie, who is finishing high school, has ambitions to become a police officer. She urges John to avenge the losses in their lives.

Oh, oh!! The oldest boy. Sean, involved in the killing of Lottie’s mother has just been released from prison. He is now a large, heavily muscled man who is seething with hatred and fury towards all and is highly dangerous.

With so many characters intent on vengeance, the story intensifies in fear and action. The ending leaves us with the necessity for a sequel, as there is more to the plot to be resolved and told.

OH MY FEAKING GOD…..This book is just epic! Having read it in two sitting I couldn’t put it down. If my job hadn’t of got in the way I would of stayed up all night reading it. With a pulse racing, terrifying start it doesn’t let you go until the very last page. And even then I am left hanging and waiting for the next book.

I love everything about this book and the fact that it is set in Birmingham where I know made it even better. Fans of grit lit are going to love it. Ashes of Innocence is tells the story of family, relationships, grief, revenge, feuds and of course its got the good guys and the bad guys. With some terrifying events all carefully woven together with an OMG ending.

It has a lot of characters, each one bringing something to the story and I have to say that I absolutely loved John. He is one of those characters you cannot help but love. I am pretty sure I went through every emotion possible while reading it. You can feel the pain, sorrow, frustration, love, happiness…..every single emotion he goes through and at the same time I was willing him along. You guys are going to love him!

This is an action packed story full of twists and turns that will have you on the edge of your seat. Now I am just left wondering why I’ve never read any the authors previous before. That is definitely about to change. Phil Price is a brilliant story teller. I cannot recommend it enough…….it is a MUST read!

Pefect for fans of Kerry Barns, Dreda Say Mitchell and Alex Kane.

A formidable book of the extraordinary written by a master storyteller

From the moment I started reading Phil Price’s new novel Ashes of Innocence, I knew I was in for an outstanding read. Having loved the author’s other books in the ‘Forsaken’ series, and his style of writing that grabs you and doesn’t let go until every emotion has been rung out of you, I knew I had to explore his latest offering. And, I wasn’t disappointed.

Ashes of Innocence is a formidable book that leaves you with an all encompassing shudder running through your body. Everything that happens in the book feels so grounded in real life. The type of things that could be happening just down the road from you. But then, just by Price’s wizardry with words, he makes each scene so extraordinary. Each event is loaded with powerful emotion you feel your heart wrenching out of your body, as if on a yo-yo string.

‘Ashes’ is a story of consequences. Of cause and effect writ large. When a single, tiny thing like a loose screw in a door handle can trigger a cavalcade of moments to shatter a person’s soul. This is story-telling at its finest. What happens when the irresponsible and selfish actions of a mother result in depraved cruelty and murder.

The book examines social differences, a dissection of the nature versus nurture debate. Does our DNA determine our path in life, or can we change through our experiences. Is our fate hardcoded into our cells? There is a whisper of inevitability from the second the flames are lit by the perpetrators and an act that destroys so many lives is committed. But such sociological questions are extrapolated to their fullest notions, and the reader sees the unveiling of vengeful bitterness and hate borne through the ineptitude of a broken system.

The tight juxtaposition between Captain John Wilson, the solider fighting in Afghanistan, taking down hostiles and the man’s wife Lucy, back in England, facing off with bravery against her attackers, desperately trying to protect her young daughter, is vivid and stark. The underlying message is clear in its brutal delivery – Evil in its many forms is pervasive and doesn’t recognise global boundaries.

This is a powerful, traumatic book that punches you in the gut with a vehemence, but the tenacity to survive demonstrated by John, despite everything that he endures is phenomenal and captivates the reader to feel everything John feels, his victories and tragedies – all the while willing this incredible guy to succeed. John as a character is mesmerizing. A handsome, strong man who searches and finds love. The love and support given by his family is the life-line, in his darkest hour, he grabs hold of , and it pulls him through the tumultuous torrents of turmoil.

There is a fascinating flow of dark and light in this book, that appears balanced and in harmony with the overall direction of the story, and this is a good element, as it exhibits the tremendous mastery and confident hold Price has on the story and where he wants to take it. It enables the flourishing of hope to remain, even when hell seems to be erupting for John. These finely balanced nuances kept me enthralled and page-turning into the early hours.

Ashes of Innocence is a book to savor and reflect on. The need for justice when all the right ways fail. The taste of revenge and, after what is left of one’s soul. A deep, beautifully-written book that connects with ones darkest fears, but also reveals humanity at its most raw; the depths a person will go to protect those they love. Absolutely unmissable read, and recommended unreservedly.

(4.5 stars)

Back in January, I was aware of Phil Price's existence thanks entirely to a Facebook group called 'The Jukebox Cafe Music Club'. More specifically, through a feature called 'Friday Night Disco' which is a sort of virtual open-mic event in which members suggest songs that fit - sometimes loosely, I'll admit - around a particular theme. Phil, like yours truly, is a keen contributor.

But whilst I had a vague idea that he had written some books, I couldn't have told you what genre they were never mind named any. Which is why it came as something of a surprise when he gifted me a copy of 'Ashes of Innocence'.

Fast-forward to March and I was lucky enough to meet Phil face to face. But whilst it was a joy to discover that he was a fellow lover of real ale, it was also a little bit embarrassing because I had to confess that actually, I still hadn't read the book that he'd been kind enough to give to me.

Well, now it's been a further three months and ... I'll beat about the bush no longer. I've read the book and I bloody loved it.

As a soldier serving in Afghanistan in 2005, Captain John Wilson thought he'd seen his fair share of horror. Only that day he'd survived an ambush by two local snipers. But the real horror was happening back at his home in Birmingham (England). The abduction of his four-year-old daughter, Lottie in a story reminiscent of the James Bulger case. I'll omit any more details for fear of spoilers, except to say that the ending is different, but no less tragic.

This sounds like it could be a short summary of the whole book, but it isn't. I've covered only the first six short chapters. But this was enough to absolutely grab me by the scruff of the neck, and the rest of the book never even hints at letting go. The rest of the book manages to somehow be fast-paced, action-packed and yet tell a fascinating story of human nature all at the same time. The rational need to try and maintain something resembling normality conflicting with the emotional desire for some form of revenge. The need to at least appear to stay strong for your family when you feel like your insides are being torn apart.

The cover of the book includes the words: "There's only so much one man can take". Well, if that man is John Wilson, he can take more than I think I could. More than once I silently pleaded to Phil Price "no, don't do that. Don't make the poor man take any more." But he did. And each time, John took it. And here's the real clincher: each time, it felt believable. John, and his family, remained relatable. Each time, I felt for them that bit more.

The setting is also wonderfully described. Most of the book is set in and around Birmingham, which I know well and which helped me to visualise the action as clearly as if I had been there, watching it take place. And yet, that can't be all there is to it because certain chapters move the story to Caithness (Scotland), Spain and Afghanistan. None of which I have ever visited. And yet I could still see the locations in my imagination as clearly as if I had been watching a film.

I really only have one tiny criticism, which is that towards the end of the book, some parts of the plot felt just a little bit forced. One twist relies on a teenager recognising someone she only once saw, briefly, when she was four. Perhaps this could happen, but I wasn't entirely convinced. Likewise, the ending, which manages to almost tie things up neatly and yet still leave room for the possibility of a sequel, wasn't implausible. But it had me wondering slightly, rather than gasping in awe. And it's for this reason that I have to deduct a half-star from what would otherwise be a perfect rating.

There's absolutely no way that it should stop you from reading the book though. A few tiny niggles aside, it's fantastic. It remains only for me to say: congratulations Phil. I'll try not to leave it another six months before rewarding you with a pint.

My thanks again to the author for the digital copy. I will post my review on Goodreads, Amazon and my personal blog.

Exciting thriller from a gifted storyteller.

John is called back from serving in Afghanistan after a brutal incident takes the life of his wife and traumatises his young daughter. John then attempts to rebuild his life but is thwarted by the ongoing actions of numerous shady characters.
Ashes of Innocence is a tale of revenge and retribution, it also explores the strength of love and the lasting effects of grief. I particularly enjoyed reading the different POVs as narrated through both good and bad characters. The author did an excellent job keeping the suspense going throughout the book. There were twists and turns throughout, which really built a feeling of suspense in the reader. Overall the book was very well written and is definitely worthy of five stars. Another excellent book by Phil Price.

I was hesitant about starting this book because the author’s other books are paranormal/ horror and they’re not ones I enjoy reading. This was completely different and from the title, it looks like the start of a series. John is protective naturally of his daughter after their lives have been destroyed and his caring side coexists with his need for justice and revenge.
It’s fast paced in places and gripping from the start, definitely a five star read.

Another great book by Phil.

This is such an emotionally charged book and it really pulls you in as one of the family.

You really feel for John and Lottie. The situation is emotional and beautiful in the same breath.

There are some really great scenes in this book. Thrilling, exciting and some that make you gasp because you can almost feel the pain.

I couldn't help but smile at the scene in the playground on Lotties last day. It was needed but I'm surprised who it was to do it. I nearly punched the air.

This was brilliant, I can't wait to read the second installment of the Wilson Files.

A sad and at time dark story of love and revenge. Set at various times between 2005 and 2018 in Birmingham, Scotland, Spain and briefly Afghanistan it’s an emotional read, particularly some of the earlier parts of the book. Great characters, some lovely but some truly despicable individuals who quite frankly deserved whatever punishment they got, and then some.

Briefly, when Lucy takes her young daughter Lottie shopping little did they know the catastrophic events that would follow, bring husband and father John, home from Afghanistan to attend a funeral. His life and that of Lottie have become inexorably intertwined with another family. One that will bring horrific consequences to both.

This was a fast paced read written from the POV of good and bad characters which only served to intensify the suspense. A very enjoyable book and an author I will read again ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

When 4 year old Lottie and her Mum, Lucy go into town to do some shopping before Christmas, nobody could possibly foresee what would happen next or the chain of events to follow over the years.

Lucy gets locked in a toilet and Lottie is led away from the shopping centre by two young boys. When Lucy gets out, she frantically tries to find her daughter and what happens next is horrendous.

Lottie’s Dad, John is on a tour in Afghanistan and is told the devastating news and sent back home. Luckily he has his parents and mother in law to help him through the dark days.

This is my first book by the author and he took me on an emotional rollercoaster. The first half of the story had me reading through tears, I found it heartbreaking. The author has weaved a tale of love, murder and revenge. The word karma came to mind a lot through this book.
A fast paced thriller that I just couldn’t put down.
This is a stunning read and I look forward to reading more by this author.

Well this has taken me on a rollercoaster of emotions, that I wasnt expecting.
It begins with the snatching of a young girl from a shopping centre. I dont think anyone alive can ever forget the image of the young James Bulger being led away by two young boys, and despite the circumstances being different, the similarities were close enough to send a chill down my spine.
However, when Lucy realises her child Lottie is missing, she goes crazy, chasing after the two boys, and eventually reunites with her daughter. Things then take a dark turn and cause the butterfly effect whose ripples affect the life of every character involved.
John, who is fighting in Afghanistan at the time has to return home and try and pick up the pieces of his life. Mandy the mother of the killer boys was a despicable character and then has to relocate to Scotland, with Jerome's money but falls in love and I wanted her to do ok.
I didnt expect to be around 10% into the book and be sobbing my eyes out. It is so beautifully written, despair, heartbreak, the love of family, all pouring from the page.
This isnt simply a story of revenge and a police investigation into the crimes. It is the story of family, of the effects of poverty, grief, desperation, drugs, violence. This includes the victims, victims families, perpetrators, perpetrators families, and the police. Phil doesnt shy away from anything, there are scenes of sex and violence, at no point gratuitous or excessive.
It is one of those oh I will just read one more chapter books and before you know it you've not slept or eaten and need to get to the end! The relationship between John and his mother in law and his parents was something that was really special, and of course the relationship John has with his daughter.
The first of Phils books I have read, but I can see that it absolutely will not be the last. Phil is a very skilled writer.

It’s every parent’s worst nightmare. Whilst out at a local shopping centre, Lucy’s 4-year-old daughter Lottie is lured away by two boys. Sean and Luke Terry have been at their prostitute mother’s vodka and cannabis. Whilst off their heads, they imagine a likeness to a horror film and drag the girl to a disused rail yard. Lucy is in hot pursuit and as she endeavours to rescue her daughter, tragedy strikes in the most horrible way. Father and husband Captain John Wilson immediately returns from active service in Afghanistan. He has witnessed some terrible things in the army but nothing compares to what he is faced with back in his home town of Birmingham. It doesn’t take long for events to catch up with the boys but there is little comfort in that for John and his family. The story then switches to six years on and proceeds towards the present day. A particularly undesirable lowlife puts two and two together, leaving lot of people involved seeking revenge or retribution in one form or another. As some of the characters start to find happiness again, only death and destruction awaits others.
This is a great thriller, with plenty of action in places and touching on just about every human emotion possible. There are some very well portrayed individuals, my favourites being DI Martin Blaney and Judy. Some of the characters’ actions, although morally or legally wrong, are completely understandable and not everything is as clear cut as it would first seem. And with an open thread left at the end, I am eager to see if there will be another Wilson File. 4.5*

Ashes of Innocence

What a tragic start to this book.

When two boys lead a small girl away from a public place while her mother is locked in a toilet you just know it’s not going to end well.

Lucy frantically searches for her daughter, what unfolds next is heartbreaking and incomprehensible.

In Afghanistan, a soldier receives a call from home, telling him that a member of his family has been murdered. He returns home to the UK to try to keep the rest of his family from falling apart.

He’s distraught and is desperate for answers. I really don’t won’t to reveal anything else as to do so would spoil the story for others.

A fast-paced thriller that had me turning the pages swiftly, eager to see where the story led. Great characters, a sinister tale that reminded me of a high profile child abduction murder case in the U.K. which happened over twenty years ago.

Highly recommended.

This is the first book I have read by this author and certainly won’t be the last.

The story is packed full to the brim with an amazing rollercoaster journey from the first page. The story slowly begins to unravel where the main character has to return home from working away due to tragic events. The story has a few characters that all have a link John, his wife and daughter.

One of the most amazing things about this book is the way the author captures the emotional attachment between father and daughter. The soft descriptive writing I felt really seemed to come from the heart of the author which really tugged at my emotions. The author was also able to capture despicable behaviours and revenge throughout this brilliant storyline. The author gave me clear vivid pictures of each part of the story which made me feel like I was there.

Another fantastic book from Author Phil Price. This is very different from his previous work, how much scope does this talented author have? This psychological thriller tells of murder and revenge in a way that made me cry, laugh and shout out loud. I was nervous while I was reading it, wondering what on earth was going to happen next. I couldn’t put it down, devouring every page. The emotion of the characters comes through so intensely that I felt as though my heart had been ripped out and trampled on. This story is everything a good book should be. Great characters, superb plot and gripping throughout. I can’t wait to read more from Price. One to watch out for. Just brilliant.

Phil Price is an author unafraid to explore different genres & his first foray into the world of thrillers is superbly crafted. We begin with a normal family, a cosy scene set perfectly, allowing the reader to get to know each characters. Suddenly wham! A child is taken & events spiral out of control. A tale of love, loss & revenge, Price explores the corners of the human mind with real insight, painting the raw emotion on each page with absolute perfection. There are scenes that will tug at your heartstrings & others that will frustrate like hell, all culminating in a brilliant ending that has me, for one, hoping that a sequel is on the cards.

Wow, Wow and Wow!! I absolutely loved this book!!
I don’t know what I was expecting, but I wasn’t expecting a story with so much going on in it and how the different characters stories intertwined as they did throughout the book, I was totally hooked after reading the first few chapters.
This is mainly a story about revenge but it contains so much more than that which for me, I loved because it gave the story so much more depth and it gave you the sense of knowing the characters on much deeper levels which made me even more invested in them.
Such a fabulous book that I’d highly recommend.

What a fantastic book this is. I went through lots of emotions. The first part was so upsetting and has echoes of the Jamie Bulger case from many years ago.

After losing his wife in horrific circumstances, John returns home from the army to look after his young daughter. The story revolves around this event, the different people involved and how what happened shaped them.

You can see how different people made the decisions they took and can understand why they did.

The story was totally gripping from beginning to end and I hope there is a book 2 in the future.

This book pulls so many emotions it’s unreal
It’s a thriller, heart aching, rollercoaster.
I felt for the characters, wanted to kill for them too.
I don’t write a synopsis on my reviews, the blurb does that.
What it doesn’t do is tell you that you will get carried along & root for certain characters.
This has thriller pace & definitely kept me hooked.

Boy does this novel pack a punch when it comes to action and revenge. It moves fast and gets your knuckles clenching throughout.

Main character, John, is put through the emotional wringer. He’s a tough chap but it had me questioning whether he was tough enough to stand up to the dregs of society that wouldn’t stop crossing his path. He was! I enjoyed the relationship between John and his daughter, Lottie. It came across as heartwarming and like any parent, he’d do anything to protect her.

I loved the locations used, some local to me and some not. They were described wonderfully and I felt as though I could have been there. This novel will definitely appeal to those who love an action thriller.

If you love a bit of violence served up with a large portion of revenge, this is your book!

a great start

A great start to a new series from this author. Great storyline. Well written characters that the author describes really well, you feel you know their personalities intimately. I look forward to #2 in the series !

Excellent book! A bit of unnecessary padding in places. Loved reading about places I know!

Don’t you just love it when a book ends and you aren’t quite ready to except it and then you are greeted with a six months later, yep this made me happy. There was so much built up emotion into this that made me feel for this characters pain in particular. How much tragedy, what you see, the scars there permanently damaging you for life that are not always visible.

I loved how this throws you into the past years and the backstory to completely prepare you to become emotionally invested into the detail. They always say the past is there to haunt you and this psychological thriller did not disappoint and was everything I anticipated it to be and so much more. It was purely powerful. This has similar traits to a lot of psychological thrillers you read in terms of different character perspectives.

I’m so glad that this isn’t the end of the story as the book series will continue. It had a hint of revenge in the sense that almost makes you think of Keane Reeves as John Wick but not as far fetched or extreme but the reality making you simply adore it for what it is. I didn’t expect to feel all the descriptions as deeply as I did. This had my heart pounding in pain and intensity.

It’s incredibly fast paced, as a parent it stung me to the core. There certainly is only so much one man can take…

John is called back from serving in Afghanistan after a brutal attack back home, leaves his dead wife and his young daughter traumatised. As John attempts to rebuild their lives, he is caught up in the actions of several unsavoury characters.

Ashes of Innocence is a tale of revenge, retribution and the power of love. I enjoyed reading the different POVs as narrated through both good and bad characters.

The author did an excellent job keeping the suspense going throughout the book. There were twists and turns throughout, which kept me gripped.

Overall the book was well written and is definitely worthy of five stars.

Another excellent book by Phil Price.
