Katherine Garbera is a USA TODAY bestselling author of more than 100 novels, which have been translated into over two dozen languages and sold millions of copies worldwide. She is the mother of two incredibly creative and snarky grown children. Katherine enjoys drinking champagne, reading, walking and traveling with her husband. She lives in Kent, UK, where she is working on her next novel.
I received an free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book has so many issues that I stopped reading it after getting tired of highlighting the mistakes. I was half of the way through the book but the story started jumping around and it was as if the author forgot what she was writing on the page before. Very disappointed in the quality of this book from an author that I've read before. Words were omitted, sentences didn't make sense, incorrect words were used (tale/tail), the characters were sitting in one paragraph but standing and sitting in the next. I'm not any fancy editor or anything but as a teacher, some of these editing issues should've kept the book from publication.
This is a sequel to Garbera’s book, The Hot Cop Next Door, about three women who have opened up a candy store and cafe on Fifth Avenue. I haven’t read the first book, but most things are pretty well explained, although I still had a feeling as if a lot of the action had taken place before this book begins.
As the book opIt turns out that Cici and Hoop are really ideal for each other. They both have uncertainties from their childhoods about what being a family means. Hoop was abandoned as a newborn and had bounced around between foster homes until one family adopted him and helped him realize what family really was. But he still fears being abandoned. And getting involved with a woman pregnant with another man’s child is enough to reawaken all those uncertainties. Cici has enough to deal with adjusting to the idea of being a mother without the father taking a role to really know what she wants with Hoop. So there is a lot of dithering back and forth for both of them, especially Cici and it gets a bit tiresome.
But what I really liked is that these seem like real people, or as real as an attractive couple in a romance novel can be. She admits that her stomach is a bit poochy and her eyesight is poor. He worries that he doesn’t have a six-pack. When is the last time that a hero in a romance didn’t have a six-pack or was self-conscious that he didn’t.
What Hoop is is a very nice, good man. He gives back for what his adoptive parents gave him by being active in the Big Brother program. He left his career being a policeman to going into family law because he wants to help others.
There were some details that I would have liked a quick explanation for. Cici and her friends have opened a business on Fifth Avenue. Where did they get the start-up money for that? She has a two-story apartment that sounds like it’s in Manhattan. Who has the money for that sort of housing anywhere in New York City? I would have liked to have had a few sentences thrown in to explain that.
But, all in all, I enjoyed these characters and was glad that they found their HEA.
I was given a free ARC of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
'Summer in Manhattan' is an easy-reading romance with a simple concept. Cici finds herself pregnant after a one-night stand, and finds herself navigating the world of dating whilst newly pregnant. It's full of romantic moments and sweet exchanges between the characters, but that's about as far as this book goes. There is no major climax to tie the book together at the end - in fact, I found the ending pretty lacklustre. Although the story itself was an easy read, there were so many errors that it drove me mad. 'Stationary' instead of 'stationery' for example. The formation of some of the sentences was awful, almost as though they were half-finished. I had to re-read things several times to try and make sense of what was being said! I wondered if I was just being pedantic, but it seems other reviewers have given similar feedback. I'd recommend this as a nice quick holiday read, but beyond that there's not much on offer.
A summer to remember…
When Cici Johnson falls for the charms of American big shot Rich Maguire, their drunken one night stand results in an unexpected pregnancy. Rich wants nothing to do with the baby or Cici, but she's determined to give their child the love of two parents on her own.
Jason Hooper's spent his whole life wondering what family really means. In and out of the foster care system, he never gets too close to anyone; just in case they walk away. But then he meets Cici and he feels as if he's finally home.
For both of them, the summer they share in Manhattan couldn't be sweeter. If only he'll let his guard down, Hoop's own happy-ever-after might not be make-believe anymore…
Sweet & satisfying! Two scarred souls, sizzling attraction ... yet life gets in their way over and over again. Can they manage to overcome their individual hang-ups in order to make a relationship work? They both really want to ... but insecurity and fear is a compelling argument against forever!
Cici Johnson hasn't exactly felt like she fit in with her surroundings for most of her life, but she's finally happy in a business with her two best friends and is looking forward to a bright future. Unfortunately her impulsiveness has gotten herself into quite the fix! When a drunken one-night stand leaves her pregnant, she's going to have to learn how to handle it all on her own because the father wants nothing to do with either of them.
Jason Hooper grew up in the foster care system, and even in adulthood, he finds himself expecting people to still turn him away. He tried keeping Cici at arms length even though there was a massive attraction between them when they met, and now when he's having second thoughts, he finds out she's pregnant with another man's baby! He's not sure this is something he can handle, and in all honesty, with the life he's lived, he's not sure he even wants to.
I enjoyed reading Summer in Manhattan by Katherine Garbara. After Cici Johnson has a drunken one night stand with Rich Maguire she unexpectedly ends up pregnant. Rich wants nothing, absolutely nothing to do with the baby or with Cici. Although Cici never expected to become a mom, she is determined to raise her baby with all the love she can. Jason Hooper was abandoned after birth and spent his entire life wondering what family means. He was in and out of the foster care system until being adopted by a wonderful family as a teen. Because of his background, he never gets close to anyone in case they walk away. After meeting Cici he feels like he’s finally found his place and his home. He has to figure out if he can accept Cici and the baby while Cici needs to stop running away and believe that Hoop has her back.
I enjoyed reading this book. It is really a great story showing the importance of friends and family and believing they have your back.s Ms. Garbera is a wonderful story teller, keeping me interested in this story and I definitely recommend this book to other readers.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
Summer in Manhattan by Katherine Garbera is a great romance. Cici and Hoop are both not looking for love but it finds them Cici finds out she is pregnant from a one night stand and tries to not get close to Hoop because the baby is not his. He gets her to accept that he can be in her life even though the baby is not his. They meet a lot because of her best friend Hayley and Garret her husband is Hoops friend. They try to fight their attraction and it was to strong for them. The real father of baby doesn't want anything to do with baby or Cici, but his parents decide that they want the baby and fight Cici for custody. Hoop is a lawyer and fights for Cici rights as a mother. They spend lots of time together over this and fall in love. I really enjoyed this book. It was one of my favorites that I have read in a while. I would recommend to anyone who wants to read a romance. This book is really well written and easy to believe the characters are real.
I won a copy of this book in an IG giveaway on the authors page.
I like the concept of the book and thought it would be a different read, having the guy she slept with not being the hero in this instance, and it was good. I did notice that in one chapter it said August and then the next page mentioned it being June and there were a few little inconsistencies like that that I've never usually picked up on before (the uni course is making me notice things more it seems!)
I would have liked more background to the characters, especially in regard to Cici and Hoop and their pasts and how they interacted before he pulled away from their kiss. I would have also liked more in regard to Cici and Rich as I think it was a little rushed but it was a good summer read and it was a good book to take a break from doing my last essay before October starts with a new module!
Summer in Manhattan is the first book I read by Katherine Garbera. The intriguing and romantic storyline had me turning the pages as I followed Cici's bumpy life journey. The leading lady of this book is left with a little surprise after a one-night stand, and that makes it difficult for her to trust anyone when it comes to commitment. The same goes for Jason, who doesn't know what he really wants from his life but there is so much chemistry between those two that it is hard not to give it a go. Cici has lots to deal with in her life, but she is a successful and determined woman who wants a bright future and happiness in her life. The storyline is oozing with emotions and great dialogues. A great romantic read for the summer.
A summer to remember…When Cici Johnson falls for the charms of American big shot Rich Maguire, their drunken one-night stand results in an unexpected pregnancy. Rich wants nothing to do with the baby or Cici, but she's determined to give their child the love of two parents on her own. Jason Hooper's (Hoop) spent his whole life wondering what family really means. In and out of the foster care system, he never gets too close to anyone; just in case they walk away like his mom did. But then he meets Cici and he feels as if he's finally home. For both of them, the summer they share in Manhattan couldn't be sweeter. If only he'll let his guard down, Hoop's own happy-ever-after might not be make-believe anymore…
This was a fun story. Cici ends up pregnant after a drunken one night stand with someone who wants absolutely nothing to do with her or the baby. Jason Hooper (Hoop) has issues with committment and attachment due to being raised in the foster care system. They had chemistry, but Hoop's fear of committment was pushing Cici away. There was plenty of tension between the two as they worked to figure out if they could be friends, or if a relationship was possible with his fears and her pregnant with another man's child. Both Cici and Hoop were great characters and good people. It was an emotional progression as they figured out their relationship.
This was an enjoyable book. The plot was believable and you had the one night stand person who's attitude made you not like him. However, you could tell the struggles both our hero and heroine were having and they were believable.
Normally I get "attached" to the main characters and for some reason this time, the attachment wasn't there and I don't know why. It was a good book, great plot and you do like, and not like, certain people as you would. I can't put my finger on why I didn't get attached, but the author still does great work.
Summer in Manhattan by Katherine Gabera is a good read filled with vulnerable characters and realistic conditions. Cici has a one-night stand but ends up with a lifetime gift. The father…wants nothing to do with the baby. Hoop is the man who knows what it’s like to be abandoned. Together, Cici and Hoop get closer and before either of them know it, romance is in the air.
I enjoyed the characters, the cover, and the writing. Both characters have their own problems they need to get through, but together and with the help of their friends and family, they are able to.
Summer in Manhattan is a feel good romance. Sexy, sweet, emotional. I love the underlying theme that families can be made by choice and not necessarily by blood. I love Hoop and CiCi and really appreciated that even though they had misunderstandings and weren't sure of anything, they still talked to each other. I've read a lot of Katherine Garbera's books and love them. Summer in Manhattan is a winner!
I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley and voluntarily reviewed it.
Cici is pregnant and it was unplanned. Now she's met someone she likes and isn't sure about what to do. He cares about her and it's nice to have beve so.eone on her side.
5 Stars to Summer in Manhattan by Katherine Garbera.
Cici and Jason (Hoop).......
This is the second book that revolves around three best friends: Hayley, Cici, and Iona. The girls own a candy store/cafe together which is successful and very popular. Although I did not read the first book, I was able to follow along with no problems. However I did have my curiosity piqued regarding Hayley and Garrett.
Cici finds herself pregnant after a one-night stand with a guy who has no intentions of being a father at this time of his life. Cici is fine with the fact that this guy, Rich, does not want a relationship with her. It was just one reckless night and she has no intentions of making her life miserable by forcing a guy she hardly knows to 'do the right thing.' However, Rich's attitude makes her feel bad that he wants nothing to do with the baby.
Well that'll be his loss!
Cici and Hoop met prior to her one-night stand. They had instant chemistry and Cici really liked Hoop and wanted to get to know him. Because Hoop has insecurity and abandonment issues resulting from early childhood, he turns Cici down and as a result, hurts her deeply. What makes the situation worse is that Hoop is best friends with Garrett who is Hayley's man. It is difficult to avoid each other however Cici does a good job at it anyway.
She avoids him. Even after he decided to reach out to her. Apparently, he liked her enough to change his mind about getting to know her better. Cici is all Hoop could think about lately.
Unfortunately, Cici does not trust him. He hurt her once and she won't allow him to do it a second time. Both Hoop and Cici have issues from their childhoods which make them wary and cautious of relationships. Besides, Cici has her baby to think about.
What follows is the very slow progress of Cici and Hoop deciding whether to take a chance on each other. Cici says they could just be friends but Hoop wants more. Only he doesn't know that he can commit to a relationship. As a reader I felt the angst and tension between them. I knew they were falling in love despite their reservations. But love wasn't the problem. The problem was whether or not either would take a chance.
There was a lot of repetitive thoughts; monologue and dialogue. I didn't need all the repetition to be engaged in the story. In fact it got a little frustrating with all the back and fourth, the same issues being brought up over and over.
That being said, I did enjoy this book and was happy and relieved with the HEA. I would like to go back and read Hayley and Garrett's story when I have some time. There is also Iona's story to look forward to.
[1.75 stars] didn't connect much with the book nor the characters. hero keeps denying & pushing things away & heroine keeps running away from things. their feelings & thoughts just seems keep repeating throughout the book. and lastly who did iona marry? the epilogue states she is a mum, like huh? not my kind of book but plot seems closer to reality compared to other books i have read.
3.5 stars. This is the first book that I've read from Katherine Garbera and I loved it. Cici might not have been ready to be a mother but ready or not she got herself a little bean. Hoop might have made the worst mistake of his life when he decided to let Cici go; a mistake that he later regrets but when he is given a second chance to make it up to Cici he seizes the opportunity. What might have started as a friendship soon becomes much more that scares both Cici and Hoop but at the end true love conquers all no matter what other obstacles might need to be faced. I loved this book because it teaches you that no matter what you are going through, what hardships you might face, when you have a loving family, supporting friends and a great partner anything is possible. A must read!!!!
I was given this ARC by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Cici is pregnant but the one night stand baby daddy has another woman in his life. She doesn't want any complications but when she meets Hoop again she can't resist the opportunity to spend more time with him to get to know him better, develop a friendship, and try to resist developing a more serious relationship with him.
Hoop is scared of committing, but fights his growing attraction to Cici.
A beautiful romantic novel about real complications, with honest communication to solve and find options for a forever after.
this book is number two to her previous book so i was a little worried if i was to understand the characters. Theres two main characters who have a one night stand and law and behold poor woman ends up pregnant, a womans nightmare you might say? Cici wants the baby but the man Rich doesnt want anything from either of them... sound familiar? theres love, hate, companionship, baby, sex, sweet and so rewarding you wont want to put the book down. Tottally enjoyable. I read this in one day. Thank you to Netgalley
