An exhilarating cross between a police procedural and gangland grit lit, No Escape is an exciting and intense character-driven read and the first in a proposed new series which begins in stunning fashion with an explosive prologue; talk about holding you captive from the moment you peel back the cover. Bam! No Escape is Casey Kelleher's latest gritty crime thriller and follows the exploits of protagonist DC Lucy Murphy who is a new addition to a team investigating crimes taking place on the rough and troubled Griffin Estate in which she spent her formative years. It’s a notoriously dicey area in the heart of London and a place which holds many bad memories for Lucy as her mother was brutally murdered on the Housing Estate many years prior. The case went cold but Lucy is determined to get justice and place behind bars the callous killer and perhaps save other families similar heartbreak.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and getting to know the cast who are mainly unlikeable or detestable and the characterisation was pretty good as you would expect for a character-led rather than plot-led novel. Lucy is a tenacious and intriguing character and obviously had a personal incentive for joining the police force which gives this book a unique and interesting set of circumstances. There are plenty of twists, turns, intriguing developments and shocking surprises as the story progresses; there is certainly enough action going on to keep you on your toes and the cogs whirring. Not only is this a thrilling story but, as you may expect, it's a profoundly emotional one too given how personal this is to Lucy. I was impressed that Kelleher was able to weave a taut plot that was both riveting and moving as many thrillers only manage one of those. Many thanks to Bookouture for an ARC.

Lucy Murphy is now a police officer. Considering her incredibly traumatic past of witnessing her mother's brutal murder when she was just five years old, this was an amazing accomplishment for her. That crime was never solved, and try as she might, she just could never remember enough details of the killer's face to have the man brought to justice.

After her mother's murder, Lucy was taken away from her home at Griffen Estate by her grandmother. Now she is brought right back to the estate. Lucy gets involved with two teens, Shannon and Kian Winters. The teens are coping with their alcoholic mother and her enabling boyfriend. Although only fifteen years old, Shannon is shouldering most of the responsibility in keeping her family afloat. Meanwhile, 13-year-old Kian has fallen in with a bad crowd, and is now under the thumb of gang leader Jax Priestly.

It takes Lucy no time to realize how dangerous Jax is and she will do anything she can to protect the teens. Meanwhile, Jax and the violence of his gang is rising, leaving Lucy with hardly any time to help the kids. The trauma she experienced is with her all of the time, and she will do everything she can to keep them from experiencing anything close to that.

While Lucy is doing her best to help Shannon and Kian, she is also dealing with her beloved grandmother who is suffering from dementia. She loves her grandmother dearly, and is struggling to take care of her despite the heartbreaking challenges. No Escape is a character-driven story where most of the characters easily touched my heart. Conversely, there are some unlikable people in this story, thus striking a fine balance.

This was a very well-written gangland thriller that kept me hoping for the best for Shannon and Kian, but especially for Lucy as I hoped she could gain closure from her mother's murder. The scenes were gritty and are often tinged with sadness. From the twists and turns to the riveting conclusion, this was a book I could not put down.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Lucy Murphy's mother was murdered when she was just 5 years old. She was the only witness, but she could never identify who the killer was. Ultimately, she was raised by her grandmother, now suffering from dementia.

Lucy's being a law enforcement officer comes as no surprise. As a rookie, her first assignment is talking to the residents of the Griffin Estate .... where her mother was murdered.

She meets two kids, both young teenagers, Shannon the older sister who does everything she can for her brother, Kian, who has fallen in with the wrong kind of crowd. Jax is the gang leader, who will do anything and everything to get what he wants ... more money, more power.

As a child, she already witnessed the murder of one innocent person. It will take all her courage and training to stop another.

This is a well-written crime fiction thriller with lots of action and multiple characters that play a pivotal part of the story. Their viewpoints are made known to the reader. Twists and turns keep the reader captivated to the surprising violent ending.

Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Lucy witness her mother being brutally murdered when she was just five years old. She decided that she wanted to be a policewoman so she could arrest thr bad guys. She goes on to be a rookie Detective. Her first case is on the troubled Griffin Housing Estate where Lucy lived as a little girl. It's not long before Lucy is investigating a murder. She's also struggling to cope with her grandmother's dementia.

This is a fast paced and gripping read. It's a character driven story that centres around teenagers Shannon and Kian and leader of the Griffin boys Jax Priestly. Shannon is trying to cope with her mother's alcoholism. Kian gets in over his head with Jax and he makes it clear to him that he now owns him. This is a gritty gangland thriller. There's multiple characters and plenty of twist and turns. This is an enjoyable read.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Bookouture and the author Casey Kelleher for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I have read all of Casey's work which I just love.

I really felt for poor Phillip caught in the trap of the gang.
Lucy now turned Police Officer, brought up on the same estate as the gang. I thought we would have more about her past and her mum's killer brought to justice and some kind of link.

For me I felt there was something missing but I still enjoyed it.

Casey Kelleher is one author whose books I turn to when I’m looking for my ‘grit lit fix’ I’m a huge fan of stories that delve into the murky world of crime. For me personally this type of book has to have an engrossing story line that features violence, feuds, and family. Even better if it’s a tale of survival against the odds. Guess what? No Escape the latest book by the author has it all, and so much more to offer. No Escape is set on the notorious Griffin Estate where crime and violence are very much part of the residents every day life. The plot follows the life’s of Detective Lucy Murphy, Fifteen-year-old Shannon and her thirteen-year-old brother Kian.

The author has created some remarkable characters. My heart went out to Shannon and Kian, the responsibilities they have forced upon them through living with an alcoholic mum, mean they’ve had to grow up fast. The lack of parental supervision means Kian is the ideal candidate to be recruited by wannabe gangster Jax and the Griffin boys. Newly qualified police officer, Lucy Murphy is another character who I warmed to, despite witnessing her mothers horrific murder at five years old, she doesn’t come across as a victim, quite the opposite, as she’s determined to make a difference to the life’s of kids like Shannon and Kian. There is also a superb supporting cast, some I grew to loathe, but there were others that pulled on the heartstrings, offering hope in the most depressing circumstances.

Casey Kelleher takes the readers into the seedy and murky world of the criminals at work on the Griffin Estate it’s not pretty, it’s violent, grubby and sometimes very disturbing, the scenes, the violence, the gangs that prey on the vulnerable residents of the estate give this book an authentic feel to the read. The author draws you into this world; you feel the fear and emotions of the residents, experience their frustrations and pain, the Estate comes alive thanks to the authors descriptive writing. I really enjoyed No Escape with its vibrant characters and gritty, authentic plot. Casey Kelleher’s writing goes from strength to strength and I’m keeping everything crossed this is the first book in a series featuring Lucy Murphy. Highly recommended

Sadly I didn’t really like this book. It gripped me at the very start with the night Lucy’s mother was killed but then when it switched to Shannon/Kian/Phillips story I wasn’t really sure whose story it was supposed to be. It kind of read more like an “a day in the life of...” rather then a novel with a beginning , climax and ending. We have multiple characters that are relatable which is good but overall none of them had a strong gripping story. I’m still not sure what Lucy’s life story had to do with the rest of the book or how the initial investigation into the death of an officer just vanished. To me it was lacking.

This is a story that’s character driven. There are a few likeable ones and ones that are far from it!

Lucy, a young qualified officer, has her own bad memories of the estate where she lived until her mother was brutally murdered. It was interesting to see how her past has shaped her into the person she is now. Along with investigating crimes that seem to keep coming back to the Griffin estate, she also juggles looking after her gran whose memory sadly is going.

The storyline to do with Lucy’s gran was endearing as well as heart breaking. My own gran suffered with dementia and I could relate to how awful it is to see a loved one going through it and them not even knowing most days who you are. I like how the author incorporated this thread in with the rest of the story.

There are so many stand out characters for me in this story. Shannon and Kian, sister and brother who are both good kids with Kian falling into the wrong crowd. Phillip, a vulnerable young man, whose life is being made a misery by Jax and his gang. Benny, Shannon’s boss, who makes you realise there are some lovely people in this world. Each one had me compelled to read more about them. Even Jax. A nasty piece of work but all of them made this an absolute must read story.

No Escape is a brilliantly gritty and engrossing story. I love stories that are set on estates and the author draws you into this world, feeling the fear and emotions of the residents. There were a couple of unexpected twists where the author kept me on my toes and had me hanging off every word. A great read!

My thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.

Lucy Murphy is our main character in this book and she has not had the easiest start to life. After witnessing her Mother’s brutal murder as a child whilst living on the Griffin Estate she decided to become a copper. Now as an adult working as a DC she is involved in a case meaning she has to go back to the place she grew up. Kian and Shannon are two kids living on the estate and pretty much doing it alone as their alcoholic Mother struggles. Shannon and Kian are very likeable characters, just kids that don’t know any different.

Once Kian falls in with a wayward gang and their leader Jax his life gets a lot worse. Lucy is involved in a couple of incidents on the estate and fears for both the youngsters, however she has her own internal battle going on. In addition to trying to prove herself at work Lucy also has to deal with her Nan Winnie who is suffering from illness and the balancing act is getting harder as time goes on.

This book I read in just two sittings and absolutely loved it. Stupidly I didn’t realise I had read book 2 before this one (not that it made any difference, but I can’t miss out)! I ended up wondering how long I had to wait for book 3….and can definitely and wholeheartedly reccomend this book!

No Escape: a thriller, police-procedural, family drama, murder mystery. This book has everything needed to be a best-seller.

The gritty themes could be pulled straight from the headlines. The pacing is good throughout the story. The characters are well-developed with great backstory.

I enjoyed the story and look forward to reading the next in the series.

Before reading Casey Kelleher books I was never a fan of gritty crime/gangland books BUT now I am totally turned around and LOVE them!! I was so excited to read No Escape after previously enjoying The Byrne Trilogy and I hope that this is the start of a new series for me to obsess over.

When Lucy Murphy was a child she witnessed the brutal murder of her mother in their home on London’s notorious Griffin Estate and the killer was never found. She is now a newly qualified police officer and her first job is back on home turf. It is obvious that Lucy struggles with the memories from her childhood and is nervous about going back. I really felt for her, not only is she in turmoil over her past and handling a sensitive case she is also caring for her grandmother who is suffering with dementia. These parts of the story were so heart breaking/warming: Lucy is never sure what she is going to find when she gets in from work and her grandmother often needs reminding that her daughter was murdered. These insights into Lucy’s personal life give you an understanding of her character and determination.

Lucy’s job now is to protect the estate’s vulnerable residents, including Shannon and Kian Winters; two kids struggling to deal with their alcoholic mother. Fifteen-year-old Shannon is working every spare hour in the local chippy to keep a roof over their heads. Unfortunately thirteen-year-old Kian has got caught up with gang leader Jax Priestly and is heading towards trouble. Lucy gets to know the siblings and is determined not to let the two teenagers become Jax’s victims. Jax has form with picking on vulnerable people including taking advantage of a young mentally impaired man called Philip (and his cat). I absolutely despised Jax and felt like throttling him!!

I was gripped from page one and sped through the pages, I can’t wait to see what’s next for this new cast of characters.

At times, this was a difficult book to read, not because it was bad, but because it was so good. Casey Kelleher certainly gives a new meaning to “gritty” in No Escape. From the prologue to the last pages, I was gripped by the stories of the characters. But trust me when I say that this is not for the faint of heart. Some of the action is, unfortunately, realistically brutal. I thought the author did an excellent job of weaving all of the individual stories together into one page-turner of a book. I don’t know that I can say that I enjoyed the plot, because it was dark and “joy” did not factor in too much. If you’re looking for a pick-me-up, this isn’t it. But if you want something well-written and truthful, definitely give this one a look. For a full review, please visit my blog at Fireflies and Free Kicks. This is a great gangland crime thriller.
Lucy has made it to CID and hoped she’d seen the back of the Griffin Estate but on her first day she’s back there.
Lucy saw her mum being killed when she was only five years old so knows how hard it is for some families on the estate.
Shannon is trying to cope with her alcoholic mum and her brother who has got in with a bad crowd and things go from bad to worse for her.
Her brother Kian soon gets in over his head with the gang from the estate and Jax makes it clear he now owns him.
Events spiral out of control one night and Lucy has to help pick up the pieces.
This is a gritty gangland thriller that had me hooked throughout.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

No Escape is a book which is all too believable and very topical, based around a troubled estate in central London, in which gang culture dominates and communities are forced into silence through fear of repercussions. Lucy Murphy may be new to her role as a police Detective, but she is no stranger to the Griffin Estate or to the dark history that has taken place behind many a door. From Lucy's devastating and hard hitting story, through to the 'challenges' faced the estate's current residents, Casey Kelleher has created a story that is full of tension, that kept me glued to the page from start to finish.

This is a very character driven story, with the action centering around two teenagers, Shannon and Kian, an autistic man, Philip, and leader of the Griffin Boys, Jax. Each of their stories are grim and twisted, each unique and, in the case of Shannon, Kian and Philip, influenced by events out of their control. Shannon and Kian have an alcoholic mother and are neglected as a result. Shannon tries to do her best by Kian but she is only a child herself. the fact that Kian then turns to the Griffin Boys as a kind of protection and the chance to prove himself as a real man is a story that is all too realistic, and all too common when it comes to the disenfranchised and forgotten youth that inhabit many of these deprived estates. The way in which Jax manipulates Kian, sucks him in and traps him in a lifestyle from which there is no easy escape, is written perfectly and whilst we can see where. this story is leading, can almost predict Jax's behaviour, it is easy to see how Kian is blindsided, the promise and lure of an easy and more affluent, although illegal life, hard to ignore.

When it comes to Philip, his is an altogether different story. Whilst Kian is ultimately a victim of his own making, Jax preying on his need to belong to something akin to a family, Philip is victim of circumstance. A vulnerable adult who Jax is quick to take advantage of. I felt a real sympathy for Philip, could see how he was let down by the people who were meant to support and protect him, although even I didn't see the one element of his story coming. He suffers no end of abuse at the hands of the Griffin Boys, and it is hard to read without feeling outraged on his behalf. It leads readers to an almost inevitable conclusion, one that will shock but ultimately satisfy.

Lucy is an intriguing character. There is no doubt she is shaped by her past and with a very challenging family life, trying to maintain a home for her Grandmother who is slowly falling victim to dementia, the pressure is on. I really liked the way in which the author portrayed her fear, her tension as she found herself time and again on the estate, trying to stave off memories of her past whilst focusing on helping the residents and trying to get to the bottom of a serious assault that happens before we join the story. She is a determined and spirited young woman, very much empathetic towards those around her, but she is very likeable. She has a good sense of humour which stands her in good stead given that she is faced with a certain amount of inappropriate banter from colleagues. But it is her very down to earth nature that makes her a joy to read about, her desire to understand the residents of the estate rather than just dismiss them as trouble, that draws the reader on side.

The book has a real urban edge to it, the whole notion of the 'county lines' culture - using teenagers and children to run drugs in order to avert suspicion - something which is more and more prevalent in society and makes it feel very relevant. It is edgy and full of tension, the pacing waxing and waning as the story dictates, but all leading to a catastrophic and violent conclusion - at least for one of the residents. Yet despite the desperate situation for so many, the darker aspects of the story that can dominate, there is still a sense of hope and some emotional scenes that will warm your heart. All in all, another cracking read from an author whose work I really enjoy.

Why have I not read any books by Casey Kelleher before! A huge mistake on my part, that I have now rectified by reading No Escape. Wow, what an introduction to Casey’s work. I was completely blown away by this book which is raw, gritty and one that I could not get enough of!

Casey has crafted a thrilling plot that makes it almost impossible to put the book down once you start. I was gripped right from the harrowing prologue, which certainly gets the heart racing and sets the tone for the rest of the story. It also captures the seedier and darker side of central London and its gangs, which has all been brought to life through the pages perfectly and realistically.

Casey has done a phenomenal job with the characters in this story. They are a diverse bunch that are very well rounded and developed. A mix of likeable and unlikable, each play out their role perfectly. It goes without saying the standout was definitely Lucy who carries the story on her shoulders well and is one character I would love to see featured again.

The ease of which I was able to settle in to this book was great. I can easily get distracted when I’m reading, but Casey had my full attention, drawing me into this world she has created. I was so engaged and felt like I was part of the story watching it all unfold on the sidelines, which is such a credit to Casey’s writing which I loved.

There is “No Escape’’ from this book! It is a fast paced, action packed read the keeps you on the edge of your seat and glued to the pages, as Casey takes you on a wild ride with that is filled with twists and turns aplenty. You have a new fan in me Casey and I look forward to seeing what you come up with next. It was a pleasure to read and review No Escape which I highly recommend.

Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Casey Kelleher for allowing me to read an advanced copy of No Escape which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Absolutely brilliant

What a read
Loved all the characters layed out in each chapter as we get to know them all and their lives.
On The Griffin Estate in London a run down estate we get to meet Shannon and Kain Winters both teenagers living with a alcoholic mother trying to make ends meet. Shannon at night is working with Benny in his chippy just to earn a bit to pay the bills.
D.C. Lucy Murphy joins Wandsworth Station and her and the team have their work cut out on the estate but she hides a sorrow from there going back to her childhood. Jax Priestly is a bad un and she sets out to protect the youngsters. And with worries about her Nan Winnie on top of work she has a lot to contend with. A fantastic story from the start, I loved it all, you don't know what round the corner and what's in store next. This author blows your mind away and it's a book you won't want to put down once you start. Well worth my five stars right till the end.

Well this has been another fantastic gripping read from Casey. She really does know how to keep her readers entertained.

I loved the story, found it to be a real page turner right from the get go. Absolutely gripping and fast paced, plus great characters that are so well written that you forget they are not real as you inmurst yourself truly into the story.

I really felt for the character of Shannon, all that she had to go through and put up with, yet she never gave up. I liked the character of Lucy, she certainly didn't have the best start in life but she sure didn't let that stop her from being their for her Nan no matter what and helping those in need that she cones across in her job.

So if you haven't discovered Casey's books yet then I can highly recommend them especially if you are a fan of books by Martina Cole or Mandasue Heller.

Hard hitting

This book pulls you in right from the first pages, a deprived estate, people struggling to get by and poverty at its worst. We have the local gang running drugs and being a terror to all that live on the estate, Jax Priestly being their leader and rotten to the core. We have brother and sister Kian and Shannon who have the alcoholic mother who needs her daughter to carry the burden of running her halfway house. Then we have Philip a very young adult who has special needs and is being used and abused by Jax and his gang, I found this heartbreaking. Then we have Lucy the young training dc who's story starts this book , when she was 5 , her mother, being battered to death and she saw it happen. This is definitely a great book , it's hard hitting, holds no punches and keeps your interest from start to finish. I would definitely recommend it to all.

Great book

I love all of caseys books and I really liked the story line I just don’t think it was long enough and was missing parts
I thought by lucy wanting to help the kids it would have been from the Start of the book and an ongoing thing not just the last part of the book I thought there relationship was going to be more intense helping them get out of trouble becoming a friend
I’m hoping by lucy not remembering her mother’s killer it will be a way to bring the next book in the series
I think the description is a little bit misleading

Another great book by Casey Kelleher

A great read with lots of characters. Each with their own story and how they intertwine with each other. There’s police officer Lucy, brother and sister Kian and Shannon and their alcoholic mum Michelle. Then there’s the Griffin gang led by Jax and poor Philip who gets caught up in Jax’s world through no fault of his. He just wants to be left alone with Mr Bobcat and then there’s Benny who owns the local chippy where Shannon works after school.

I loved this book it really resonated with me .
Love the character Lucy Murphy lots of depth to her and more to come I’m sure.
She is a Police Officer who’s motivation to join the Police was witnessing the brutal murder of her mother when she was 5 . The investigating DC at the time of her mother’s death is now her DS un be known to Lucy!
Then there’s the estate gang led by the despicable Jax Priestly what a horrible piece who prays on the weak and vulnerable. I hated him but these people walk amongst us !

Fabulous read

Loved this latest book it was one of those books that you literally did not want to put down! Shannon and her brother Kian were such good characters and poor Philip 😢 so glad he had a happy ending... I and just waiting and praying for another instalment of Lucy and a resolve in her quest for answers x

Please do not read this book it you are an animal lover

I give this book 1star because there are some parts of the book which are cruel to an animal. Being an animal lover i could not bear to read no more than 40% of the book. You have been warned . It will upset you as it upset me .
