2017: A look at the year ahead of us

2016 was a tumultuous year that changed the world. For many, it was a terrible twelve months, filled with celebrity deaths and unfortunate political results at the polls. For others, it was the year that the little guy struck back against the “establishment”. 2017 reviews the year just gone and then looks at the year ahead of us, making predictions about what is to come. Along the way, Nick Tyrone will take us to Burnley and Norwich, Dublin and Venice, Brussels and Washington, talking to Leave voters on the Kentish coast and Beltway insiders about what Brexit and Trump will mean for the months directly ahead.

First of all, I really enjoyed this book. It's a very entertaining read but also slightly odd in the way it combines serious political analysis and predictions with chapters of fictional encounters that read like a Bill Bryson travelogue(if he'd taken acid).
There's plenty of good explanations of events, some things I knew but that were explained more clearly and things I hadn't thought about.
The more apocalyptic predictions are terrifying. I'd read and thought of some myself but there's some in here I hadn't considered. (North Korea nukes Seoul and all out war between US, Russia and China ensues)
I was a bit shocked at the certainty with which the author asserts Marine Le Pen will become French President( or at least has a major influence). I did not think this was a serious possibility. And bear in mind that Nick Tyrone is a sane, centrist voice.
Overall, this is well worth reading, and the slightly zany style captures the moment, I think.
