About the author

Stephen Edwin King was born the second son of Donald and Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King. After his father left them when Stephen was two, he and his older brother, David, were raised by his mother. Parts of his childhood were spent in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where his father's family was at the time, and in Stratford, Connecticut. When Stephen was eleven, his mother brought her children back to Durham, Maine, for good. Her parents, Guy and Nellie Pillsbury, had become incapacitated with old age, and Ruth King was persuaded by her sisters to take over the physical care of them. Other family members provided a small house in Durham and financial support. After Stephen's grandparents passed away, Mrs. King found work in the kitchens of Pineland, a nearby residential facility for the mentally challenged.

Stephen attended the grammar school in Durham and Lisbon Falls High School, graduating in 1966. From his sophomore year at the University of Maine at Orono, he wrote a weekly column for the school newspaper, THE MAINE CAMPUS. He was also active in student politics, serving as a member of the Student Senate. He came to support the anti-war movement on the Orono campus, arriving at his stance from a conservative view that the war in Vietnam was unconstitutional. He graduated in 1970, with a B.A. in English and qualified to teach on the high school level. A draft board examination immediately post-graduation found him 4-F on grounds of high blood pressure, limited vision, flat feet, and punctured eardrums.

He met Tabitha Spruce in the stacks of the Fogler Library at the University, where they both worked as students; they married in January of 1971. As Stephen was unable to find placement as a teacher immediately, the Kings lived on his earnings as a laborer at an industrial laundry, and her student loan and savings, with an occasional boost from a short story sale to men's magazines.

Stephen made his first professional short story sale ("The Glass Floor") to Startling Mystery Stories in 1967. Throughout the early years of his marriage, he continued to sell stories to men's magazines. Many were gathered into the Night Shift collection or appeared in other anthologies.

In the fall of 1971, Stephen began teaching English at Hampden Academy, the public high school in Hampden, Maine. Writing in the evenings and on the weekends, he continued to produce short stories and to work on novels.

Muy poco que decir, un libro que es un final bastante redondo y acertado para la saga de Bill Hodgens, pero que se queda un poco corto emocionalmente por momentos, mientras que por otros se presenta un poco melodramático en su tratamiento de asuntos delicados.

A diferencia de la segunda entrega de esta trilogía, Fin de Guardia sí está a la altura de Mr. Mercedes. No es mejor, no para mí, pero es un libro que estoy segura que muchos que lo leáis recordaréis con el paso de los años. Diferente a los dos anteriores. Con un toque sobrenatural que no le sienta nada mal y un trato de los personajes mejor manejado que en Quien Pierde Paga, que apenas veíamos aparecer a sus protagonistas. El final deja huella y el mensaje que intenta transmitir Stephen King es importante en los tiempos que corren hoy en día (pero no diré más porque no quiero spoilear). Un buen cierre para una saga que tiene sus altibajos (sobre todo en su segunda entrega), pero que aún así merece la pena leerse. ¿A destacar? La relación de Hodges y Holly. A Holly en sí. Y a la evolución de Jerome que pasa de ser un poco "pegote" a ser alguien realmente importante. Brady es perfecto como villano. (Morris, tú te puedes ir a la caca -como diría Holly-).

De la trilogía es la más psicológica, paranormal. Pero está muy bien escrita y siempre dando retazos a todo el pasado. El desarrollo de los personajes desde Mr Mercedes hasta éste también me parece muy bueno.

“Spoiler Alert”No puedo decir que el libro no me gustó puesto que sabemos que Stephen King no nos decepciona, pero darle el poder de psicokinesis a el autor de una masacre fue más que injusto. El libro tiene un buen desenlace no lo puedo negar y al final hasta lloré, rompió mi corazón pero debo aceptar que el ex detective Bill Hodges ya estaba entrado en edad y le toca descansar en paz.

I can’t say I didn’t like the book, because we know Stephen King never disappoints us, but giving the power of psychokinesis to the author of a massacre was more than unfair. The book has a good ending—I can’t deny that—and in the end I even cried. It broke my heart, but I must accept that former detective Bill Hodges was already getting on in years, and it’s time for him to rest in peace.

Una historia que al inicio honestamente me costó un poco engancharme, lo que me ayudó fue el hecho de ser parte de una trilogía. Me gustó la evolución de los personajes y la química desarrollada por el equipo de Finders Keepers. Me pareció en algunos momentos, en especial el final, el repetir la misma fórmula que utiliza Stephen King en varios de sus libros. Me gustó el cierre que se le da a la historia y me pareció conmovedor. Mi personaje favorito se volvió hacia Holly Gibney, como esa amiga incondicional que cuidó de Bill Hodge durante todo el libro.

En relación al autor, sus novelas negras y policiales tienden a tener un final más redondo que los de terror, y en este caso, la historia de Bill Hodges tiene un buen cierre, superando el gusto a poco que me dejo el título anterior.
