Dead Straight Music Guides

The Dead Straight Guide to Guns N' Roses

Rate this book
When Guns N' Roses exploded onto the mid-eighties West Hollywood underground scene, their faces were already familiar to the kids frequenting the clubs peppered along sunset strip. Axl, Slash, Izzy, Duff and Steven had been drifting from band to band gigging in hope rather than. Expectation they were barely into their twenties yet considered themselves veterans. They still looked the same, but the sound emanating from the stage was definitely different. It was raw, raucous, and most unquestionably of the streets.

This is hardly surprising given the songs that would end up gracing their debut album, Appetite For Destruction, were penned in the squalid vermin-ridden garage space with no toilet that they called home. The band were careful to keep it real by writing about their day-to-day experiences in the jungle where they played.

Appetite For Destruction wasn't only a cut above what their competitors on the aqua net hairspray scene were playing, but was also the antithesis of what was going on in the music mainstream. The photo adorning the album's back cover was just as intimidating as the music. It shows a band oozing confidence and charisma; a gang of real-life rock 'n' roll outlaws that had the walk to match the talk, and it sold by the truckload.

Illustrated in colour throughout, The Dead Straight Guide To Guns N' Roses covers the history of the band from their turbulent booze and drug-fuelled West Hollywood origins through to the not in this lifetime tour regrouping. It also includes a complete album-by-album guide and much more. Whether you're a seasoned ‘gunner’ or takin’ your first sip of 'nightrain', this book has something for you.
