Excerpt from The Marcaboth Women

Later, when the birthday had gone, the bracelet still glittered upon the lady's arm, and for weeks, for months, even perhaps for the entire year she would say, Oh, yes, it was my birthday present. And she would smile again as she had smiled when she had first opened the white kid box.

But it was true that there was a certain short stretch of hours in which a diamond bracelet failed a man. These were the hours that immediately followed the dying down of the first ecstasy. During those hours the bracelet be came something that had been wonderful and would be wonderful again, but right now you couldn't ride in it, you couldn't listen to it, or you couldn't learn to fly it. The bracelet is certain] gorgeous, darling, but what shall we do this evening? What plans did you make? After all, it is my birthday. Are we just going to sit here and look at each other? Where are you going to take me?

A quick retro pulp read boosted by a rather clever investigation of the years of history and reasoning behind rigid social expectation. By investigating the why, rather than the trope, Delmar creates characters and events that don't fall into the usual paint-by-numbers world.

I loved this book. I laughed at the author's incisive portrayal of how people lie to each other and to themselves.

I loved this book. When I researched the author, I understood why it was such an excellent piece of writing and character development. Vina Delmar was the Oscar award winning writer of the screenplay THE AWFUL TRUTH - a fine classic movie.
