The Gentleman’s Impertinent Daughter: In a London park, Darcy observes Elizabeth playing with her cousin, Michael, and overhears her remarks to Georgiana concerning the role of love in marriage. Bingley has already leased Netherfield, Darcy & G. are to travel there the next day. Mrs. Gardiner’s children spoke to G. after she returned a ball and so they are introduced and invited to the Darcy’s house for dinner. Darcy, Georgiana and E. travel to Hertfordshire together as Elizabeth wins the friendship of Georgiana and Darcy is quickly falling under her spell. Debating even as they travel both soon find love has grown between them. However as Wickham observes Darcy’s feelings towards Elizabeth he intervenes to thwart Darcy similar to canon. Both Elizabeth and Darcy find reasons that the other would not now have them. Only intervention by Georgiana moves things forward.

@ 25% - A Sense of Obligation Desire and Obligation Series 1 A Pride and Prejudice Novel Variation: Elizabeth and Darcy (who has been drinking heavily) share some passionate embraces as they dance (while he sings) and she cuts her hand when he breaks a glass in the library at Netherfield. She has also injured her ankle on the stairs. He carries her up to her room and departs. However, the next morning with a bloody handkerchief in his bed and other signs of intimacy, he assumes the worse and offers for her. She turns him down saying that although there was compromise no one knows. She realizes she is not one he would chose to marry. The sermon that Sunday morning…if you commit adultery in your mind you are as guilty as if you had done the act…convinces Darcy he must atone. He is persistent and finally Elizabeth accepts but not for the reasons for which Darcy feels he must offer. This story could easily be called A Comedy of Misunderstandings, as ODC continue to believe one thing is meant by what is said only to find out much later that it was not what was meant. Jane and Charles also fall victim to temptation, which is a surprise to everyone. But the biggest shock is who Caroline ends up marrying.

@ 96% - Eavesdropping: A Pride and Prejudice Novelette Variation: As the title tells us, both Darcy and Elizabeth overhear comments which lead events in this story. They have many discussions and sort out misunderstandings as expected. The first event is that Darcy overhears Charlotte and Elizabeth discussing Jane’s feelings for Bingley. Realizing Darcy heard this Elizabeth seeks a way to ask him not to reveal what he heard to Bingley. In arranging to meet him Darcy misinterprets whose feelings Elizabeth wants to talk about…thinking she, like so many other ladies, is attempting to find a way to be alone with him and compromise him. As he observes her more, he changes his mind. Caroline is as we know her: often seeking his attention or making snide comments about his attention to Elizabeth.

I saw that it was a story collection and noticed one of the stories I had definitely read twice before. I wonder how often the author recycles the same stories? Luckily, I borrowed the book from Kindle Unlimited, but I’d be more annoyed if I had to pay full price for repeated content!

So depending on how many P&P variations you have read, the collection of stories will either be incredible value for money or a bit of a waste. There are several stories of varying lengths. Some I’ve read before, some I thankfully hadn’t.

A Gentleman's Impertinent Daughter
Reread - Darcy becomes acquainted with Lizzy in a different way - he didn’t join Bingley when his friend first entered the neighbourhood and instead Darcy meets Elizabeth in London (as she has escaped from her mother’s lamentations over rejecting Mr Collins) He is enthralled by her looks and energy, and overhears a conversation that shows Lizzy to be a gentleman's daughter, with her uncle as the second son of a second son (which is why he entered trade)
This story bothers me in that it seems so bizarre for so much to be revealed in a conversation between Lizzy and Mrs Gardiner. The info they discuss is well known to them - they’d have no reason to explain to each other and so it feels very much convoluted.
Darcy and Miss Darcy happily befriend the Gardiners and Lizzy, and offer to take Lizzy home when they go visit Netherfield.

Letters from the Heart
Another re-read. I actually read this as part of another collection, then on its own.
I love the literature references in this book.

Pledged
An alternate universe story where the Bennets have a son. Sam Bennet is Jane and Lizzy’s older brother and good friends with Will Darcy. A social gathering in London introduces 16 year old Lizzy to the Darcys - Mr Darcy and his son and heir Will, along with Mr Bingley and his son Charles. Lizzy and Will don’t get on at first and the young men promised each other they’d not get involved with each other’s sisters - but Will soon regrets that promise.
It’s so interesting to see younger versions of the characters and have them interact with their parents. Sam Bennet is a fine addition to the cast of characters - loves his sisters but has his own secrets and issues that could jeopardise everything. Wickham is just as frustrating and immoral as always.
This issue I have with this story is how short it is. It’s incomplete. An extract from a sequel story claims that each part is supposed to be a complete story on its own but it certainly didn’t feel that way. I can’t help but feel that at least the first 2 of the 3 novellas in this series should have been together as one longer story.

A Sense of Obligation
Mr Darcy believes he has drunkenly taken Miss Elizabeth Bennet’s virtue the night before the Bennet girls were planning to return home from Netherfield. He realises he must marry her and for some reason cannot be to upset at the thought of it though he does lament his ungentlemanly conduct. Elizabeth however is unaware of this - as her sober experience involved only the mildest hint of compromise and no deflowering! In fact, her opinion of Darcy improved upon meeting his unguarded, drunken and relaxed state in the library that night. What follows is a swift engagement and lots of misunderstandings as neither realise what each other recall of that night.
I quite enjoyed this one. It did border on silly at times but it was sexy and sweet all wrapped in one. Caroline Bingley’s fate made me laugh!

The Secrets of Pemberley
A new one for me. Fitzwilliam Darcy is not in fact the biological son of Mr George Darcy, but rather a product of his mother’s affair. He becomes heir after the legitimate Darcy son has died, and is raised by his aloof father to succeed in the role of Master of Pemberley. It’s not a plot I’m very keen on, I must admit. I dislike when Darcy’s parents are portrayed so negatively.
Darcy’s visit to Hertfordshire proceeds as the original and we skip to Darcy’s Easter visit to Rosings where he encounters Elizabeth Bennet once again. I love the relationship Darcy has with Colonel Fitzwilliam in this story - their banter often made me smile.
This story continues as a Darcy POV retelling of events leading up to the hand over of the letter. There’s a bit of deviation from this point. I almost gave the story up because there was far too much telling vs showing in the writing but the plot twist made me give it another chance.
I liked the latter half of the story a bit more and seeing rivalry and romance and bit of court drama. This story grew on me and in the end,and I liked a lot of the new characters well enough. Wickham wasn’t so bad in this. After this story is an extract from another book in the series which looks at the Secrets of Donwell Abbey - a variation on Jane Austen’s Emma. I prefer Pride and Prejudice so I’m not sure I’ll follow up on that one.

Mr Darcy’s Bluestocking Bride
Another new one! A story I have been meaning to read for a while actually. Darcy’s elderly Baroness Aunt asks him to wed a bluestocking (overly academic) wife to take over the leadership of her Bluestocking Society for Ladies. This one follows the plot of the original but instead of Darcy meeting Lizzy again at Rosings, he sees her in London beforehand. He’s still fighting his attraction for her while also trying to avoid the matchmaking schemes of his Aunts! One variation is that Lizzy has overheard Wickham being a cad and so doesn’t trust him as much as in the original - she’s a bit more receptive to Darcy’s good qualities and enjoys spending time with Miss Darcy and Darcy’s Aunt. I was saddened by the change in Bingley and Charlotte’s characters and Colonel Fitzwilliam is a bit too rakish for my liking, but I found myself liking the new characters introduced and seeing alternative relationships grow. The revelations and unveiling of the author and recipient of the letters that appear at the start of each chapter were excellent - I was thoroughly invested and entertained.
So much so that I was bitterly disappointed that the story ended, and that save for a short excerpt, I have to wait until December before I can read the sequel! I have my theories about how things will go so I cannot wait!

Eavesdropping
A short and sweet variation where Darcy and Lizzy find themselves overhearing conversations which reveal what took far longer in the original to be revealed. A little rushed, it was still a cute way to end the short story collection.

Overall, I did enjoy reading this even though I’d already read a couple of the stories before. There were a few things that I didn’t enjoy in each story but overall they were well written and entertaining. I’m not sure how far I’ll enjoy the sequels sampled throughout the book (apart from Bluestocking!) but it’s great that we get to try them out. Rose Fairbanks obviously has an amazing work ethic and passion for Austen variations and it’s great to read so many well researched and interesting takes on the characters. I do like how each seems fresh, new and mostly in keeping with the original characters.

Finding love different ways

Totally loved these different stories in which Far y and Elizabeth fall in love. Each one is unique in what happens and what they go three to get together. Amazingly written and highly recommended to read.

The Gentleman's Impertinent Daughter: A Pride and Prejudice Variation
This was a really fun book by Rose Fairbanks and I enjoyed this twist in how things might have turned out if Elizabeth and Darcy had met away from Meryton and her mother and younger sisters. I also enjoyed the Georgiana in this story and seeing her with the Gardiner's getting along and talking about Derbyshire. I look forward to reading more by this author in the future.

A Sense of Obligation: A Pride and Prejudice Variation
This was a really fun book with several unexpected surprises. I enjoyed seeing how the relationships developed between all the characters as well as seeing the various things that were different from the original story. I enjoyed the ending of the book although I still would have enjoyed an epilogue to see how things were going for the characters in the future but the story did wrap itself up well.
