While Det. Murphy is escorting a prisoner to the County Jail, CBS4 Reporter Stella Reynolds gets Cas Rockman's confession to shooting David Bennet on camera. About a week later, Stella finds herself at the scene of a house fire. After reporting that she is not sure whether the fire was accidental or arson, Stella gets a call from the station telling her that another reporter has called in sick and she is stuck working a double shift. As she waits for the replacement photographer to show up, two homicide detectives arrive at the scene of the fire. Later Stella learns from Det. Murphy that there was a body in the house, but there is no comment as to the cause of death.

During an interview with the Mayor, it is confirmed that the body in the house fire was that of Luanne Rockman, Cas Rockman's mother. When the interview is cut short due to it being an "ongoing investigation", Stella is left with more questions than answers.

Back at the station, while Stella is writing her story for the daytime reporter, she gets an anonymous email with a big tip - Two Victims, One Shooter! Keep digging!

Unfortunately, as Stella starts to dig deeper into the shooting of David Bennet, her life is threatened and she is told to stop investigating the case. Another tip from Anonymous tells her there is a big gang and drug problem in the city, even though the mayor says that crime in the city is down.

Who is Anonymous and where does he get his information? Are the two murders actually related? Will Stella be able to uncover the truth or will this be her swan song? Is there anybody she can trust or is she just being used?

This is a well-developed story with complex characters and an intricate plot. There are a lot of twists and turns that will keep you guessing. Once started, this book is hard to put down.

Stella is in Knoxville Tennessee working as a TV reporter, and rooming with her friend Janet the bartender (whom she met several books ago.) She is still trying to maintain a long-distance relationship with her race car driver boyfriend, Lucky. A man confesses to murder during an interview while her friend Annie's husband Murphy is arresting him. But moments later, a strange man tells her she should 'check her sources'. The man is the arrested man's father, who insists his son did not commit murder and she should discover the real killer. Natually this piques her interest and she begins sleuthing. Before she is done, she has uncovered corruption at the highest levels in the police force. This was a good story, only slightly interrupted by romance, since both of her boyfriends are elsewhere most of the time. I'll be continuing with the series.

News reporter Stella hears a confession to murder during an interview. The only problem is she doesn't believe him, and neither does the suspects dad or her anonymous tipster. As Stella and her quirky friend, Janet, investigate, she is followed by the FBI and threatened by gang members. Yep, she's on the right trail. The problem is that the trail has a lot of twists and turns and leads to several upstanding members of the community.

Love the characters and the different plots that can occur due to the unusual occupation of the main character. Janet is just the right kind of off-beat sidekick. I have to admit I was surprised when I learned the identity of Anonymous.

This is a fun and fast-paced cozy mystery which will keep you glued to your seat and rapidly turning pages to find out what will happen next and how it all plays out. Although it is the third in the series, it is a stand alone novel, as are the others in the series (which I have not read, but have purchased since reading this one!). There are a few mentions of people and events from the past, but not enough to distract from this story if you haven't read the others.

Stella is a very determined character, and you know fairly early on that she won't stop till she gets all the details of this case sorted out. She has some rather hilarious moments at work and in her personal life, as well as a few suspenseful ones, all of which add to the enjoyment of reading the book.

The supporting characters, both in and out of the newsroom, also add to the story in a variety of ways. Her roommate, Janet, is one of my favorite supporting characters, as is Lucky, the racecar driver. I look forward to seeing from the first two books how those relationships started, and hope they both continue to develop in future stories.

I really enjoyed this book, although I feel like the first two were better. But I'm still excited for book four and the spinoff with Janet!

In the mix

Stella is always accidentally on-purpose in the midst of some hullabaloo. This was just another unfortunate event on her resume that turned out well.

This character has an unrealistic number of people who "tell her things" but the book is entertaining and I enjoyed it. Second or third book I've read in this series and they are entertaining.

She’s at it again!

I’ve read all three books in the Stella Reynolds Mystery series. Stella never backs down. Even when she’s placed into a situation where she knows she should. Finding the truth and doing what’s right will always be her guiding force, even more so in this latest installment, when a suspect confesses to a murder she’s convinced he hasn’t committed.

Why is he lying? Who’s covering for him? Soon, she discovers there is so much more beneath the surface, more than she could have ever imagined. Putting her own life on the line, again and again.

A few things I’ve noticed about Stella in The Big Overnight:

She’s changed. Big-time. I can still remember a young, inexperienced woman venturing out in front of the camera, trying to find her place within the media world. Stella has gained an immense amount of experience over the span of three novels, coming into her own with confidence and grace. Not as keen on taking crap from anyone. I really enjoy character development. She has plenty of it.

It’s not always about finding that special someone and creating a happily ever after scenario. It’s about finding your own happily ever after, no matter what that entails. It’s not that Stella doesn’t have suitors. Far from. You see plenty of sensual conflict between herself and other characters. Yet, she’s all about living her own life- whether that’s with a man, or without one.

Her circle of trouble keeps getting bigger. Bigger than she could have ever imagined, involving those she trusted the most. I think that’s often the case in real life, too. Usually it’s the ones you least expect it from, who end up pulling the wool over your eyes, causing the most damage.

The Stella Reynolds Mystery series can be read individually, or as a whole- they stand alone or collectively quite well. But I recommend you read all three. It’s been fun being part of Stella’s journey, from start to finish, watching her grow and change, yet never letting go of that relentless drive that keeps her going, that makes her undoubtedly Stella.

A huge thanks to Libby Kirsch for sending me her latest novel! I am reviewing it voluntarily. I have loved Stella Reynolds from book one and this latest installment was no exception. We get to see the return of many fun, big personalities like Janet, John, and Lucky. Stella catches a suspect’s confession on camera, but an anonymous email convinces her to keep digging. While she tries to figure out the case, she discovers the FBI has taken an interest in her. Meanwhile, a third party is threatening Stella if she doesn’t drop her investigation. The more Stella digs, the more layers she uncovers and she finds that corruption goes deeper than she ever expected. I love how Kirsch’s novels really lay out the investigation clearly, while still leaving some surprises until the end. The danger and mystery is interspersed with hilarious antics. Stella feels like a real person with flaws who makes mistakes, but she still kicks booty. The book ended with an idea of where Stella will be in the next story and I can’t wait to read it and find out what happens!

I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reading Copy
I read the first book in this series, THE BIG LEAD, and absolutely adored it. The second book, THE BIG INTERVIEW, was slightly underwhelming compared to the first. But I was still looking forward to THE BIG OVERNIGHT and I am so happy to say it reminded me of book one! So hard to put down, eagerly flipping pages, and such a fantastic ending. I loved everything about this one, including the romance sub plots that kept me guessing as much as the mystery. Definitely recommend the full series!

A quirky, humorous, fast paced story with a great mystery to unravel.
Characters meld into each other and you wonder which way it's going to go.
I would have liked a little more on the romantic side, but that's just my nosy opinion wanting to know more about Lucky & Stella. I didn't realise it was the 3rd of the series, maybe there's more in previous instalments
A first read from this author for me and certainly not my last.

Love this series. Once again Stella ends up in the midst of things; however, this time its on her own front yard. The book was full of twists and turns. I loved the Valentine's Day scene. I enjoy how each book is set in a different location as Stella's career grows. Janet once again is a fun character...nice to see more background on her. Can't wait to read more of Libby's books..

Each book in this series is better than the last. Stella is back again with a new job and a new mystery to solve. The Big Overnight had me quickly turning the pages. Lots of laughs , mystery, and romance keeps me coming back to this series. Of course, Janet and Lucky ate another reason I keep reading! Can't wait for the next big story!
