The Philippines is my mother's homeland. I was surprised to learn it consists of over 7,000 islands making it an archipelago. There are currently over 20 active volcanoes and even a pink beach made up of white sand and crushed red coral located at Great Santa Cruz Island. More than 109 million people live in the Philippines making up a variety of ethnic groups: Bisaya, Bikol, Ilicano, and others. Popular pastimes include basketball, soccer, boxing, video games, card games, and chess. But, karaoke is a favorite!
This informative book is geared toward 4th graders, so it hits the high points -- population, jobs, education, food, culture, animals, etc. It's just enough of a teaser that the photographs invite the reader to want to research it more, and perhaps even visit one day.
